My children are eating me out of house and home. lolol I went grocery shopping almost two weeks ago. Replenished my pantry and put away groceries in the fridge and freezer. They lasted maybe five days or so it seemed. My teenager is going through a weird growth spurt. She has grown six inches this past year. She is now my height and is burning energy playing basketball and lacrosse.
There is no junk food in my house. No soda. No candy. She reads labels and refuses to eat any product with a high amount of soda. Pitchers of water in the fridge. I have her drinking more water in case she is thirsty and has mistaken that for hunger. These days, my daughter is a want-to-be veggie.
I've had the wasting food talk with her speech, the sharing food portions with your sister talk, the there are hungry, starving people in Africa talk, the you couldn't live during your nana's country back in the day talk and the what happened to (insert food item here)______ speech. I posted my frustration with my teen's habits on my mom site. I found out I wasn't alone.
Turns out my friend is going through the same thing with her daughter. She (the mom) couldn't believe it either. And wondered where her food was going. Her daughter grew six inches and two dress sizes. Like me, I complained how everything is more expensive this year than last. My pay stub isn't keeping pace.
As soon as I get my snacks and food in the house: they disappear. It's just gone. I knew boys ate a lot. No one warned me that girls could possibly eat like them. I can't keep cereal, milk, bread, or cheese in my house these days.
Then I thought about the millions of children who go to bed hungry every night. And was thankful that my kids didn't fall into that category. Somehow, we'll make more changes. Increase the number of healthy options in the house and patiently wait til my next check came in. Living paycheck to paycheck isn't easy this time of year. The heating bill went up and we in New York State could use a break. The joy of motherhood.
