St. Loius Screening Of “When I Rise,” The Inspiring Civil Rights Story Of Barbara Smith Conrad (2281 hits)


Conrad to Visit Harris-Stowe State University and Hold Student Workshop in Conjunction with the Screening

WHO: AT&T with co-hosts Harris-Stowe State University, the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus, Opera Theatre St. Louis, and nineNetwork.

WHAT: “When I Rise” is a feature-length documentary about Barbara Smith Conrad, a gifted University of Texas music student in the mid-1950s, who finds herself at the epicenter of racial controversy, struggling against the odds and ultimately ascending to the heights of international opera. Her distinguished career, which includes performances with the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Teatro Nacional, Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera, and Pittsburgh Opera, among others, has touched the lives of audiences around the world.

The film was an official selection of the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival and the 2010 Dallas International Film Festival, among others. It was the recipient of the Audience Choice Award for feature film and the Black Expression Award from the 2010 Indianapolis Film Festival.

On February 8th, “When I Rise” premiered on PBS’s Independent Lens. Overall, the program will air 1,123 times on nearly 500 PBS local affiliates across the country.

WHEN: The invitation-only screening of “When I Rise” will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2011, at 7:00 p.m.

WHERE: The program will take place in the Main Auditorium of Harris-Stowe’s Dr. Henry Givens, Jr. Administration Building. Harris-Stowe State University is located at 3026 Laclede Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63103.
