Anniston, Alabama native, Jessica Miller, was recently named 1st Runner Up to Miss National United Negro College Fund (UNCF) 2011-2012.
When reflecting, Miller said, "This is a big accomplishment and it feels great to know you are raising money for a good cause to help future generations achieve an education because they are the future. A lot of work and time and dedication went into it. We held a lot of fund-raisers to help get ready for this conference. Many students don't know about the UNCF or the Pre-Alumni Council of UNCF, so we have also been promoting the organization. As a result, more students are interested in becoming active Pre-Alumni Counsel members for next year."
All Stillman students are members of the Pre-Alumni Counsel, as a $16 yearly fee to join is included in their student activity fees. However, deciding whether to be an active member or not is up to the individual. The Pre-Alumni Counsel serves as a fund-raising and community service oriented facet of the UNCF.
Miller explained, "For instance, right now, myself and another Pre-Alumni Counsel member, Jessica Nathan, are participating in community service by working with teachers at Central Primary teaching first graders addition and subtraction."
Miller is a sophomore at Stillman, majoring in biology/pre-medicine. She has her sites set on being an optometrist one day. In addition to her participation as a Pre-Alumni Counsel Member for the UNCF, and being prepared to attend any events that Miss National UNCF cannot make in her stead, Miller is a member of the Christian Student Association (CSA), the Pre-Med Association and she serves as a Resident Assistant for Wynn Hall.
Stillman is heavily involved in fund-raising for the UNCF and last year, received Miss National UNCF honors, as Tiffany Donaldson won the national title and represented the 39 member institutions at various events throughout the country.
