I live in Downtown N.O. where there are a lot of beauty shops in the area...2 are owned by Chinese and the other is Black owned...but it's sad how the Chinese and Arab owned beauty shops are the first choice that our people go for to buy hair weaves...I heard a sister on my block complaining about how she cussed out one of the managers of the Chinese owned store and how she was growing tired of shopping for fake nails there because she felt as though the Chinese are always looking at you funny and thinking you're stealing from them...I asked her if she always had this problem then why don't she start shopping at the Black owned store across the street...she said a lot of our people refuse to shop Black because they feel as though they are being cheated when it comes to supporting their own kind. Another complaint I hear about with Blacks doing business with each other is that the term Black is often a turn off to many consumers including other Black people. We have got to do better...

Not trying to change the subject, but you know that you've found some good reading when the work negro is still used in the text. I located this online and felt that I had to slide it in somewhere. It's about mental psychology and could also apply to why Blacks don't shop with each other. Negro mentality in 1910 The mind of the Negro can best be understood by likening it to that of a child. For instance, the Negro lives in the present, his interests are objective, and his actions are governed by his emotions. . . . William H. Thomas, himself a Negro, also noted the childish traits of his race: "The Negro lives only in the present, and though at times doleful in language and frantic in grief, he is, like a child, readily soothed by trifles and easily diverted by persuasive speech." ... If cheerfulness is characteristic of children and of the Negro mind, so also are impulsiveness and fits of anger. The Negro, like a child, is easily irritated, and prone to quarrel and to fight. When angered he becomes a "raving Amazon, as it were, apparently beyond control, growing madder and madder each moment, eyes rolling, lips protruding, feet stamping, pawing, gesticulating." The Negro has little home conscience or love of home. . . . He has no pride of ancestry . . has few ideals . . . little conception of the meaning of virtue, truth, honor, manhood, integrity. He is shiftless, untidy, and indolent . . . the migratory or roving tendency seems to be a natural one to him. . . . The Negro shirks details and difficult tasks. . . . He does not know the value of his word or the meaning of words in general. . . . The Negro is improvident and extravagant; ... he lacks initiative; he is often dishonest and untruthful. He is over-religious and superstitious ... his mind does not conceive of faith in humanity he does not comprehend it. Because he wears a Palm Beach suit instead of a string of cowries, carries a gold-headed cane instead of a spear, uses the telephone instead of beating the drum from hill to hill and for the jungle path has substituted the pay-as-you-enter street car his psychology is no less that of the African. Yet the question remains, and may long remain, whether the manner in which the Negroes were brought into touch with civilization resulted in the greater blessing or the greater curse. The cultural handicap of the Negro is explained in these terms: Like the mountain peoples of Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina, who for two centuries or more have been held in isolation by their mountain fastnesses and hence have fallen two centuries behind the procession of civilization, so the African peoples, shut in by the natural barriers of their own continent for thousands of years, have dropped many centuries behind the progress of civilization, not altogether because of less capacity, but mainly, at least, because of less contacts. Since the culture of Africa therefore is quite different from our own, we are apt to conclude it is inferior. His culture is inferior and the Africans as a people are inferior. During slavery he was separated from fellow-tribesmen, taught a new language, and inducted both subtly and forcibly into the culture of the white masters. Beyond doubt, there are some survivals of African culture, but to determine exactly what those are would require a very different type of research. It has often been pointed out that the skin-color of the Negro makes him an all too visible mark for prejudice, no group in the population of this country has been more completely convinced of the inferior nature of the African background than have the Negroes. Negroes themselves accept as a compliment the theory of a complete break with Africa, for above all things they do not care to be known as resembling in any way these "terrible Africans." The tradition and culture of the American Negro have grown out of his experience in America Africa is a badge of shame; it is the reminder of a savage past not sufficiently remote, as is that of European savagery, to have become hallowed. Yet without a conviction of the worth of one's own group, this is inevitable. A people that deny its past cannot escape being a prey to doubt of its value today and of its potentialities for the future. It is necessary to discover, as precisely as possible, the tribal origins of the slaves brought to the New World, and on the basis of these facts to obtain as full and accurate knowledge as we can of the cultures of these folk.

Helen, you are so on point. Things won't change until we learn to love ourselves. It's funny how most of our people reading this are supporting Korean owned and operated businesses everyday and our people are spending billions of dollars a year on their clothing, food, etc. and the Koreans ain't giving us jack **** in return.

Hello Helen, All though the writer accurately describes Black Americans; nevertheless, we are not Africans as the author thinks that we are and that we need to connect with the tribes we came from and Africa. Black Americans are a new race of people that came into existence approximately 500 years ago when Whites bred themselves with the many different kinds of African slaves they purchase from the slave traders White Americans from the very beginning of the first slave ships that brought Africans to this country consistently bred themselves generation after generation with their slaves that produced Black Americans as a new race of people. We are neither Africans nor are we Caucasians. We are a new race of people and in time to come we will see ourselves as a new race of people as we get ready to become a sovereign people on a fertile portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders. What your post say about Black Americans since 1910 is practice right here on BIA amongst ourselves. We are some very dumb people and only God could help us and that is happening as I speak. Our religion is the greatest factor that keeps us divided when neither Islam nor Christianity belongs to us. Our religion is LIFE. Tell me what you think.

Harry Did you read the part that said, "The tradition and culture of the American Negro have grown out of his experience in America, and that Africa is a badge of shame". You keep trying to direct our attention away from our original heritage, so I think that you are ashamed of your ancestor. We wouldn't find you in a store owned by Blacks anyway.
