Assumptions: Nature vs. Nurture (557 hits)

Ok you guys I am very much into assumptions about people. Right now I am doing a survey. My question is do you think we as people are who we are because of our genes, heredity, (Nature) or do you believe we are who are because of our experiences, environment (Nurture)? What do you think helps us develop our personalities? Please voice your opinions and tell me what you think.

Both. A number of factors play a part in helping us develop our personalities from family, to schooling, to music and the media. Some of these factors offer positive examples and patterns for us to follow and perfect in the future (faith in God, giving back to the communties, etc.) while other factors offer negative examples and teach you to be clowns and fools (robbing, killing, and getting high). It all boils down to eduation, the RIGHT education!

Hey Shauna:
Great question. Makes us THINK!!!

Here is my take:

Assumptions about people? Be careful. To assume means to come to a conclusion, form an opinion without proof or factual basis.

People are complicated. I would have to agree with the folks who say both. But the mixture is different for everybody. WE are all unique individuals.

What do YOU think???

Development is the result of ongoing, bidirectional interchanges between heredity and environment. Genes are affected by the environment in a positive or negative manner. Imagine 2 people born with the same exact predisposition to violence. A warm, nurturing home vs. abusive home will lead to different outcomes. The person from the nurturing home may learn to have more patience and control over their emotions.
