Educators, PR Practitioners To Discuss Lessons From BP Oil Spill (2273 hits)

Examine crisis response tools, strategies that worked in the era of 24/7 media

University professors and public relations specialists will examine crisis communication blunders and lessons learned following the BP oil spill of April 20, 2010. The seminar will take place at Florida Memorial University on April 20, 2011 at the Smith Conference Center from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was the world’s largest marine oil disaster. The spill left a significant, long-lasting impact on the environment as well as the region’s tourism and seafood industries. The spill was also a classic example of a public relations nightmare for BP in particular. How prepared was BP for this disaster? How did its spokespeople do? How well did the federal government and the Gulf States communicate and connect with the public during the spill? What crisis communications messaging tactics, including PR and social media, worked?

Educators and PR practitioners will address these issues at a panel discussion, titled: “BP, PR and Crisis Response Lessons: One Year Later.” They will examine the collaborative response to the spill by BP, the federal government, the Gulf States and municipal governments, with a focus on crisis communication breakdowns and effective tools used during the spill.

Panelists are as follows:

Dr. William Hopper
Dean, School of Arts & Sciences; Professor, Chemistry & Environmental Studies
