Track and field legend Carl Lewis officially announced on Monday that he’s entering a race — a political race, that is.
The AP reported that Lewis, now 49, announced his bid to represent his hometown of Willingboro, N.J., in the state Senate. He will run as a Democrat in the state’s 8th District for the seat currently held by Republican Dawn Addiego.
According to the AP, the nine-time Olympic gold medalist said he “hopes to inspire people, encourage communities and improve educational opportunities for children.” After the press conference, the U.N. goodwill ambassador and founder of the Carl Lewis Foundation headed to Willingboro High School, where he is a volunteer track coach.
