OBAMA ON RELEASE OF BIN LADEN DEATH PHOTOS: "WE DON'T NEED TO SPIKE THE FOOTBALL." (1065 hits)

POLITICO, May 4, 2011--The White House will not release the photos of Osama bin Laden taken after he was killed, President Barack Obama said Wednesday.

“It is important for us to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool,” Obama said in an interview he taped with CBS’s “60 Minutes.”

“That’s not who we are,” the president said, according to quotes White House Press Secretary Jay Carney relayed at the daily news briefing Wednesday. “We don’t trot out this stuff as trophies.”

“We don’t need to spike the football, and I think that given the graphic nature of these photos it would create some national security risk.”

Obama told “60 Minutes” that releasing the photos would not dissuade conspiracy theorists and might lead to violence.

“We don’t think that a photograph in and of itself is going to make any difference. There are going to be some folks who deny it,” Obama said. “The fact of the matter is you are not going to see Bin Laden walking on this Earth again.”

The president said there is no need to release the photo because bin Laden’s death is beyond reasonable dispute.

“We are absolutely certain that this was him. We’ve done DNA sampling and testing, and so there is no doubt that we killed Osama bin Laden,” the president told CBS. “Certainly there is … no doubt among Al Qaeda members that he is dead.”

CNN is reporting that there are three sets of photos of bin Laden’s corpse: from the raid, from a hangar in Afghanistan and from the USS Carl Vinson, before he was wrapped in a shroud and buried at sea. The shot from the hangar is close up on his face, with a visible head wound across both eyes, and is said to be the goriest.

Carney said the president’s decision was due in part to concerns that the photos could be used to glorify bin Laden or his cause.

“There is a long history of images like that being used to rally opinion to [portray] people depicted in those photographs as heroes. We’re not interested in doing that,” Carney said.

Here we go: either you believe the highest levels of the US govt or you don't.

They may have lied about many other issues--but I don't see any reason to doubt them on this one.

Dear Saint Jake:

Great questions. Some of the answers to your questions are publically available, covered by varioud news sources.

Almost immediately after the Americans left, the Pakistani Armed forces took control of the compound. According to today's NY Times, the wounded, including Bin Laden's wife and daughter, were taken to hospitals for medical care. The Pakistani government has stated that they will be returned to their country of origin, namely Saudi ARabia.

There was no mention of what happened to the dead left behind--but the fact of the matter is that they are under control of the Pakistani government who will take charge of the matter as they see fit.

Forget transparency. The whole operation is classified for National Security purposes--and you can understand why.

I respect the President's decision and that's why he's in the top position in the land, eh although I still doubt the validity of the mission. Can I see the footage with them blackening out the actually photo of his death? ((Lol))

@ Brother Rich,
Here's a interesting question brought by one of Piers Morgan's Program... Why don't the Pakistani Govt. interview the wives and the daughter on live television about the death of their dearly departed husband and father on live television? I think that would be sufficient, don't you?

Hi Jen:

Hey, it's only been a couple of days. I am sure we will hear from them in due time. Some journalist will seek them out. And I have a feeling they will have a lot to say.

Rich, this is America the land so free until we tend to be our own worst enemy in our resistance to educate or be Educated 'properly' because it takes too much time and energy to do this. examples,

right after it was known that the photoes would not be releasted by a president who value the human life and peace not wa as the war to reach peace on earth goodwill towards mankind is what was done on FOX to cancel our president out...

Shepard Smith or Your World@fox...sid they would be filing freedomof information act to get these pictures...so much like the show me your colleg records to prove you went there right aftet the end of show me the birthcirticic...because they already know full well that they will bee runing into the Natioan security blocage...which dispite bush's useage of this to help him dismatel our Constitution, this president will be crucified for doing so...

Next fox program to follow this one was Your World with Niel Cavudo...he started out his program with this ("I" know ment ofr sound bites) how he had proof our president had lied because he had the photes in his hand at that very moment...later he tried to play it off as a joke...but sound bite made for training for so many accompoished never the less!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are we really the nation taht would not allow photos of our dead troops returning home from teh middle east...

are we teh same country that has our senaters saying they have seen photos or teh dead bin Laden in ordeer to demean our president as not fit to lead...

are we the nation taht can send $$billions to pakistan andnot one cent for our schools...

are we the nation so concerned about human life that we refuse th hep get health care for the first responers of 9-11 therfore allowed them to die..

are we thecountrynow looking for Palistanis to make us look good while theri own citizens are protesting against us much like what cause BinLaden to come into existance...??????????...

but, this is all good because without this we would not be being forced to hire back those men we spent millions and millions on to translate for us then fired them because they were gay...and we now will get asking about those wepons in Iraq that got 1000s of our troops dead and our nation on the verge of financial collasp...

@Rich once again I will quote my sainted grandmother, " GOD MAYNOT COME WHEN YOU CALL HIM BUT HE IS ALWAYS ONTIME"...OUR GOVERNMENT IS COMING BACK INTO THE HANDS OF THE AVERAGE CITIZEN...(SMILE)
