Barbershop Buzz: Should we ban saggy pants? (959 hits)

The Florida legislature passed a bill last week banning saggy pants in the state's public schools, punishing students who show their underwear or "butt crack."

The sponsors of the bill, state Senator Gary Siplin (D-Orlando) and state Rep. Hazelle Rogers (D-Lauderdale Lakes) are black. Some critics have questioned whether this new bill -- if signed into law by the governor -- would promoted racial profiling.

We hit the barbershop and asked: Is it fair for a law to dictate what public school children can wear? Do you think this style of clothing is associated with a negative image? Do you think a like like this promotes racial profiling?

Tune in and see what the folks at the barbershop had to say!

Although I detest saggin' pants, I don't think that banning them is the responsibility of any local, state, or federal govt. This to me isn't racial profiling, but a matter of what is deemed good grooming. The people of the community need to come together and discuss not pass laws about things that they don't like or don't understand. Communication is key here to get understanding. An for the record, my son better "not never' let me see him wearing his pants in such manner! ~ha

I agree allow the saggy pants wearers their opportunity to be easily apprehended by the police and taken to JAIL, where saggy pants wearing is appreciated by the criminal BOYS.

Actually the origin of the sagging pants look was from slavery. It was the intent of slave owners to demoralize the field workers by forbidding them to wear a belt as they worked in the fields or at any other rigorous job. In addition, men in prison wore their pants low when they were 'spoken for'. The other reason their pants looked like that was they were not allowed to have belts because prisoners were likely to try to commit suicide. And, saggin' pants prevents you from running. And the word S-A-G-G-I-N spelled backwards is N-I-G-G-A-S.

We as young Black people have to be the ones to effect change. Something as simple as pulling up your pants and standing with your head held high could make the biggest difference in the world's perception of us.
