Why Choose an HBCU Education at Howard University Erik Michielsen: And so as you are navigating graduation from Brooklyn Tech deciding where to go to school you made a decision to go to Howard University down in Washington D.C. Phil McKenzie: Yeah. Erik Michielsen: What fueled that decision? Phil McKenzie: I really was getting to know more about my culture for an African-American experience that started to become very important to me. And when I was looking at colleges I was looking a ton of different of things and I started to kind of make a more formed decision. I really wanted to go to HBCU and start with my college or university. And of all the one that I looked at, Howard was by far the best, still the best and I really felt like I would be at home there. I didn’t want a southern experience necessarily so DC, those South of New York seemed very southern to me at the time. But it was a still a city that was kind of grounded with a good cosmopolitan feel to it that I felt comfortable with coming from New York to kind of go to a major city and Howard just seem a good fit for me.
