Darius Ross, Huntsville, Ala., native and rising senior at Stillman majoring in English, and Vincent Hale, Chattanooga, Tenn., native who is a senior majoring in music and vocal performance traveled to San Francisco, Cali., to attend the 100 Black Men of America's 25th Annual Conference on June 9-12. Ross and Hale are members of The Collegiate 100, an auxiliary group of the 100 Black Men of America comprised of college students.
"The Stillman College Chapter met up with the University of Alabama Chapter and flew to Cali! It was all expenses paid and we had a blast," said Ross. "The 100 Black Men of America is a mentoring centered organization so when we got there we got to attend different workshops everyday that covered issues such as HIV/AIDS, becoming a successful executive and understanding the company you work for," he explained. Ross heard from a variety of speakers, such as the Reverend Ray Lewis, Dr. LaJoyce and Nycal Anthony Townsend.
"It was a wonderful opportunity and experience. It made me want to bring so many ideas back to Stillman for our benefit," said Hale. They taught us so much. I recall a couple quotes they used to drive home ideas. The first was 'Be around people who will celebrate you, not tolerate you.' Here they drove home the point of having positive inner circles, who will help push you towards the life you see for yourself in for the future. The second was 'Bring your A-game everyday, with no time outs or days off.' This was to remind us that we shouldn't get complacent in our actions towards success," Hale explained.
One of the highlights of Ross' trip is when he met and was photographed with R&B Superstar, Keyshia Cole. "It wouldn't even be possible without the endorsements of the 100 Black Men of America," said Ross grinning. "What an amazing trip!"
