ARIZONA DENIES COVERAGE TO MAN ON SOCIAL SECURITY FOR HEART TRANSPLANT THAT WOULD SAVE HIS LIFE (1899 hits)

THINK PROGRESS, June 28, 2011--Since last year, low-income Arizonans have been feeling the impact of a series of brutal Medicaid cuts that officials predict will kick at least 135,000 people off the state’s health care rolls by next year. Now, thanks to these cuts, a Yuma man may be unable to afford a heart surgery he needs to survive.

Steven Stephenson recently quit his job over health issues. While he was working, his income fell under the federal poverty limit, and he would have been covered by the state’s Medicaid system, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). Yet when he quit his job, he enrolled in Social Security. His income actually increased thanks to this, and while he would have been still covered under AHCCCS just a few years ago, the new cuts actually will make it impossible for him to enroll.

Why? Because thanks to his Social Security payments, he earns $12 too much to apply. Due to his medical condition, he has been ordered by his doctor to not work, and he desperately needs surgery.

Stephenson said he cannot work anymore based on doctor’s orders and has been told not to do anything to avoid stressing himself out. This is a problem for Stephenson. “I love working. I can’t sit around and do nothing,” Stephenson said, evidently frustrated with his situation.

Stephenson did not have heart problems until he reached his 40s. While he has not had a heart attack, both of his parents died from one. “It’s what you inherit from your parents. Too bad it wasn’t good looks, I’d be better off,” Stephenson said with a laugh.

[Stephenson's best friend] Weissman said he plans to organize a series of fundraisers in the community to help his best friend out with his medical bills and to get the heart surgery under way. “You know how somebody passes away and all of a sudden they hold carwashes to help bury them … Well, I’m going to do fundraisers to keep mine alive,” Weissman said.

Last week, the Arizona Supreme Court announced that it will not be taking action to stop planned Medicaid cuts or an enrollment freeze; activists had hoped their lawsuit would compel the state to reverse some of its harsher cuts, much like the Washington state supreme court reversed some cuts in that state. While Stephenson’s situation is a direct result of Arizona choosing to cut its Medicaid program, it bears repeating that the United States is the only rich country that does not provide comprehensive universal health care coverage to all of its citizens. In no other wealthy country would a man be told he can’t afford a life-saving surgery.

All of these stories about our totally dysfunctional health care system always make me angry.

There is no good reason for it.

What a sad state of events that we find ourselves in here in the States. Although I do understand the need for Universal Health Coverage, I think we need to find better ways of doing things rather than continuing to have the middle class bear the brunt of the burdens of this country. The wealthy people need to stop with all this nonsense of Me, Myself, and I and pay more in taxes so that States like Arizona will not have to cut programs to balance their budgets!

Even when you look at Canada, the amount of taxes that they pay (43% GDP) is outrageous for a Health Care System that has its own unique problems like wait times for certain surgeries and to see specialists can be weeks to months depending on the type of surgery or specialist. It's not all roses there infact if the Canadians don't do something to better their system of inefficiencies and deficiencies, they will soon be facing a crisis. The hospitals in Ontario have many challenges with patients who are deemed ALC (alternative level of care) that can't be discharged because there aren't nursing home beds.

These kind of patients drain the system and have created huge dents in the Canadian Federal government's budgets.

Great point Jen--

Health care is a tremendously complex issue.

But...anyone--and I do mean anyone who is not independnelty wealthy--who gets sick or injured in this country has to add the struggles and tensions of finding doctors who will take your particular health insurance, then waiting weeks for appointments, then fighting with insurance companies for full coverage, then, in the end, having to pay out of pociket enormous amounts anyway.

SAd to say, that is typical.

At least in Canada, nobody--and the number is zero--has to file for bankrupcy due to health care expenses.

It really makes me mad.

@ Rich,
Perhaps you may have a point regarding the bankrupty, but Canadians do file bankruptcy but not as often over medical bills but due to health reasons. Univ. Health Care in Canada has no coverage plan for prescription drugs needed after hospital care; Employer coverage thru working and having medical coverage takes care of that just like here in the States. In essence, a person can live while in the hospital in Canada and be discharged and come home and die because they have no money or job to buy medicines.
I realize the grass looks greenier on the otherside, but once you get to the other side one sees the grass isn't at all that different.

See link below>>>
'The three leading causes of personal bankruptcy in Canada'
The last on our list of leading causes of bankruptcy in Canada, are medical problems; they often can and do lead to a lot of financial problems. Fortunately, in Canada most of our medical expenses, such as hospital care, are covered by the government [...] However, if you get sick or injured, and you are off work for a number of months, even with medical insurance your income is reduced, and that makes it more difficult to service your debts.

@Jen, you know me and it is my belief taht we as Americans insult Canada but using their country as an example. EXAMPLE, Canadians have promised if Bush comes back into their country he will be tired for war crimes...Canada is a place Americans go to be able to buy affordable perscription meds...they have a fail safe on their off shore rigs taht if we were not so bent on greed we would have never had the Gulf spill in the first place...because one can not drill without first puttin gin a relief well needed to haee prevented our Gulf oil spill...and for me it is a shame we should use this nation taht looks out for its own as an excuse fo rus not doing the same.

and, again, "I" only speak for my own self on this matter as being abusive ifn rejecting facts as teh Canadians do. (smile)

@Rich, "I" believe Rachel's program tonight just gave the perfect reason for some of these things happening with our state governors doing such irrational things...and as always all roads leads to greed and the governors selling their state's citizens and anything even related to why we have elected them going to hell in a hand basket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had just come back on as I watch Rachel's segment called 12 Angry Men as in state governors being tracked to a retreat with the Koch brothers over the weekend and what all of these governors have i common from donations and getting their marcing orders at meeting led by teh 2 Koch brothers in preventing voting in states like Fl and union busting and yes the bill just signed by the N.J. governor...Rich this is scery to no end of how our nation has been soled and we still have no idea. in denial, ect.

Rich just as the bill in Arizona reminds me of the Hitler regiem tis gathering of governors over the weekend reminds me of the RICO law that our government has become a national criminal interprise!!!and, if you have not seen her program tonight, please try and get it as soon as possiable as this just don't seem possiable and yet we see our rights to vote to having our government work in our favore each and every day lately... (NUP)

The first thing tomorrow I will be contacting senater Barbara boxer on tis matter and why they will not , have not looked into this matter of teh KOCH brothers and its relationship to getting rid ot ACORN then i will go on to CC it to others. but first I must be able to get over this shock which has me now once again worried about my girl.(smile)
