HSSU Is the First Urban Institution of Higher Education to Host and Charter Its Own Troop
A new Girl Scout troop sponsored by Harris-Stowe State University’s College of Education represents an historic partnership between the University and the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri. Harris-Stowe is the first urban institution of higher education in the area to host and charter its own troop. The troop installation, which was part of the Girl Scouts’ recent “Urban Scouts Awards,” took place at the Emerson Performance Center on Harris-Stowe’s campus on Saturday, June 18, 2011.
“As an urban institution of higher education, we are delighted to bring the Girl Scout program to our campus,” said Dr. LaTisha Smith, dean of the College of Education at Harris-Stowe State University. “The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri are dedicated to building girls of courage, confidence and character. The faculty, staff and administration of Harris-Stowe share this vision and commitment. We are excited about this partnership, which is yet another example of our commitment to our students, as well as the St. Louis community.”
In addition to the troop installation, the event recognized outstanding Girl Scouts throughout the metropolitan region, including girls who have earned the highest awards in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. Additional awards were presented to HSSU officials, members of the community and Girl Scout volunteers.
