BLOG COMMENTARY:
I am not always stunned at much today. In fact I am more likely to see, hear or even live the unexpected. Thereby, I came across a story of a Black Family of Prince and Charlomane Leanard surviving in a way they felt necessary for their family I wasn't surprised. However, the Lenoard's being homeless sought to live in a enviornment of 12 x25 foot storage shed. How they landed up there was due to their poverty and when Prince got injured on the job, experienced lack of employment and were evicted from their apartment. However, even with the father finally finding employment with a family of husband and wife with 6 children can be a hardship to find proper shelter without due time. This Houston based family has lived in the tight quarters of the shed home for years. In their cramped but peaceful enviornment they found little other troubles and showed a strong devoted family. Until one day someone took notice of their children playing outside and they were reported to the Houston Child Protection Service.
The Leonard's family's children were all taken from them and placed in custody of CPS because of their circumstances and living conditions appeared unsafe for their children. The Leonard's are in total distraught and are severely concerned about their children being taken away. They hold to that none of their children were ever neglected, and that their living enviornment was safe for their children. In fact the couple indicated where they once lived was in a neighborhood of high crime. What makes this story touching is they want to have all their children returned to them. They are permitted to visit their children for only six hours weekly, but long to have the all back together again.
Scenes like poverty are very real in Black in America. The Lenoard Family believes in family unity and there appears to be a show of genuine love for all their 6 kids ranging from 12 to 2 years old. Although the case seems fairly hopless one can only be sympatic in that their living conditons will improve and they all will be together again. The storage unit provides the couple with a small refrigertor and air conditioner, a matt for bedding and shelving. It lacks a running water or toilet , but they have a gallon container and uses a compost toilet. In addition they have a vegetable garden behind the shed which they plant every summer. The family also has a vehicle. Poverty has a grip on them, but hope has allowed an handout that soon the day they will have a house and home. It is evident they have lots of love.
Plans are not hopeless at all! The couple has purchased land in an area of Liberty County where they are planning to build a new home. Until then Lenoard and his wife still reside in the shed. I was very stunned that the outcome of poverty can be overcome with patience and perservance depite of struggles. This is an Amazing story of survial of American's Black Poor.
