GOP PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARIES: NEW RULES FOR CANDIDATES (620 hits)

By HOWARD FINEMAN, HUFFINGTON POST, August 13, 2011 -- As far as the substance of politics goes -- the issues we will debate in 2012, as opposed to the horserace -- the money shot of this week in Iowa didn't come with the Ames Straw Poll, but appeared last Thursday night. Byron York of the Washington Examiner asked the eight candidates on the stage of the Fox debate whether they would oppose a budget deal that contained 10 dollars of spending cuts for every dollar of revenue increases.

All eight hands shot up.

The moment was indicative of what is happening in the GOP today, and the results of the Ames Straw Poll only confirm the point.

And here it is: Based on what we heard here in the debate and on the straw poll stage, the GOP has committed itself to a New Ten Commandments for party members and their candidates.

With the exception of Ron Paul's radical pacifism and laissez faire attitude on regulation of drugs, and except for John Huntsmann's semi-support of civil unions, there is very little if any philosophical or programmatic difference among the candidates on most issues. Indeed, there has never been a time in the modern history of the GOP when the presidential contenders differed so little on the issues.

They seem to believe -- or at least dare not say that they DON'T believe -- in a new Ten Commandments. Ironically, there is plenty of "Big Government" on their stone tablets, at least in the form of proposed new constitutional amendments that would override the freedom of the states to set their own rules on social behavior. "States rights" is no longer necessarily a high priority in every or even most respects.

Instead, the contenders are adhering to the following guidelines:

• Thou Shalt Not Raise ANY Taxes
• Thou Shalt Pass a Constitutional Amendment to Make Abortion Illegal
• Thou Shalt Pass a Constitutional Amendment to Define Marriage as the Union of a Man and a Woman
• Thou Shalt Repeal "ObamaCare," AKA the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
• Thou Shalt Repeal The Dodd-Frank Banking Regulation Act
• Thou Shalt Pass a Constitutional Amendment to Balance the Federal Budget
• Thou Shalt Only Give Military Support to "Our Friends"
• Thou Shalt Limit the Power of -- If Not Entirely Abolish -- the EPA
• Thou Shalt Drill, Mine and Frak to the Widest Extent Possible
• Thou Shalt Take the Name of President Obama in Vain

Do most Republicans believe in these New Ten Commandments? Maybe not a majority, and maybe not even a majority in Iowa. But there is little doubt that almost all of the people who voted in the straw poll -- and most of the activist core of the GOP today -- believe in the list.

The fact that there is little or no debate over any of these issues in the presidential campaign means two things: The primary season is going to be mostly a personality and look-at-my-record race, full of references to titanium spines and jobs created. And, once the GOP victor gets the nomination, he or she is going to have to not only move to the left, but run there.

It will be fascinating to watch.

I like those commandments, but let's all see how this is going to play out come 2012 election. I'm still looking for a serious Republican contender to stand against the incumbent. Ha!

Irma--

As for the Tea Party going against the laws of survival, I just saw a clip where our friend MB defends tax cuts for corporations who are now sitting on billions in spare case--but refuses to extgend unemployment benefits.

This completely contradicts what economists are advising--increase revenues from corproations to lower the deficit and put cash into the economy by extending unemployment benefits to those who have no income.

I should put it up here.

If they cancel each other out--that is what is known as a circular firing squad!!!

And Romney is going to be firing away as well. They are all gunning for each other!!!

@Jen, I always vote my conscious and this is why I proudly voted in the last presidential election for Ron Paul...I voted for himknowing he would not win, but I felt more comfortable with his giving open and honest answers to the questions...Jen I doubt if there is another person more LIBERAL that me...

and for me the people on the right are too much for exclusion and dedicated to not being their own thinker, example, how soon do you believe everyone of those who raised their hands will change when pressed to answer for their own action a sit taking ullll responsiabitiy for it beyond talking pints for protecting those who spen the most money on them...

Jen that is if you really and turly want toonly get paid $7.50 and hour until congress ee fit to set your wages again in say it took them over 10 years to raise the minium wages from $5.00 and hour...lets see Jen are you willing to pay say about $50.00 more about every 6 months for your heath care...

what I am trying to get across is if you vote for one person on the right be they Republican or Teaparty you will be voting for your middle-calss safety net to be taken along with hell by 2012 and since you state has a Republican governor you may have lost your very right to vote in 2012...

just saying a few known and proven facts.

NOW TO WHY I REALLY CAME ON THIS BLOG IN THE FIRST PLACE...THE PROBLEM WITH THE REPUBLICANS AND TEAPARTY IS THEY GO AGAINST TH ELAWS OF SURVIVAL. EXAMPLE, SURVIVAL IS FOR THOSE WHO CAN BETTER ADABT TO A CHANGING IN THEIR ENVIRONMENT AND THE RIGHT-WINGERS ONLY SPECIALIZE IN TALKING POINTS...

THE VOTER'S ENVIORNMENT IS TODAY MORE LIKE...JEN DID YOU SEE MICHELLE BACHMANN GET A TAST OF WHAT IS IN HER FUTURE ONMEET THE PRESS TODAY...SHE HAD NO PLACE TO GO WITH HER TALING POINTS ON USING THENAME OF GOD AND HOW GOOD OF A CHRISTIAN SHE IS BECAUSE TODAY IS AN ENVIRONMENT IN IF YOU CAN NOT STAND ON YOU OWN RECORD FOR BEING QUALITIFE THEN YOU HAVE GOT A PROBLEM IN SURVIVING AGAINST OUR PRESIDENT WHO HAS A RECORD TO STAND ON WHICHINCLUDED HOW THE BOCHMANNS AND THE RIGHT GOT US INTO THIS MESS IN TH EFIRST PLACE WITH A POLITICAL BASE OF FAMILY, CHRISTIAN VALUE AND LESS TAXES...

NOW THA T IS THE 'GOD'S' TRUTH READY OR NOT. (ROTFLMAO) (SMILE)

"THOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS".............LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL...

@Rich..Lemon just said after these commercials they will have Perry speaking from the Iowa fair...Perry on before Bachmann now this can't be good or is this letting the guest go first??? At any rate this makes no sense to me at all...oh well as expected Perry is putting our president down...how expetaly boring...but he still have even more illegals coming to work as it is getting real harvest time even during the lack ow water in Texas and his begging the frderal government fo rmore aid to his declared desaster dry areas in Tx.
