COHABITATION, UNMARRIED COUPLES LIVING TOGETHER, IS ILLEGAL IN FLORDIA AND G.O.P. AIMS TO KEEP IT THAT WAY (2023 hits)

THINK PROGRESS, September 1, 2011--Thousands of unmarried couples who are living together in Florida may be surprised to learn that they are actually breaking the law. Under outdated and rarely enforced state laws that have been on the books since the late 1800s, “cohabitation” is actually a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by $500 or up to 60 days in jail. The same penalty applies to adultery – which one Florida woman tried to have enforced for her cheating husband in 2006.

The Sun Sentinel reports that one Florida Republican is commendably trying to repeal these irrelevant laws — only to be met with mass opposition from his fellow Republicans including Gov. Rick Scott (R). These social conservatives won’t support his effort to finally legalize a common practice and would prefer that official condemnation of couples “living in sin” stay enshrined in state law:

Now, Rep. Ritch Workman, R-Melbourne, is on a mission to repeal the statutes penalizing adultery and cohabitation, as well as other laws he finds outdated, like a requirement that all bicycle riders keep one hand on the handle bars. [...]
Nobody else much wants to talk about it either.

Asked how Gov. Rick Scott felt about the measure, spokeswoman Amy Graham replied simply, “This isn’t an issue the governor is focused on.”
The bill has no Senate counterpart. And given the almost-certain opposition of social conservatives who lobby hard on “family values” issues, it’ll face tough sledding in an election year.

Consider the response of state Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, who previously headed the Florida chapter of the Christian Coalition: “I’m not ready to give up on monogamy and a cultural statement that marriage still matters,” he said.
Cohabitation, especially among young couples, has become an increasing trend in recent years. The number of unmarried couples living together increased tenfold from 1960 to 2000, the U.S. Census says. It’s a practice that’s often derided by social conservatives, who fear that it is replacing traditional marriage.

However, maintaining the legal option of throwing these couples in jail seems a tad over-the-top, not to mention tragically out of touch with the reality of millions of Americans. In fact, one of Florida’s most prominent residents, NBA star LeBron James, is technically breaking the law by living in Miami with his high school sweetheart.

make the familyDecadents be responsible and get Married, every Culture of progress on the Earth has been a married society, children need Legitimacy, family needs Legitimacy and Procreation MUST be legitimate----

the Family of Adaam(as) should marry as the Monotheistic 3-4 Thousand year Traditions have approved.........

I never cohabitated with anyone, but below are a lot of reasons why more couples cohabitate or "shack up":

1. They think "why buy the cow when you can get free milk?",

2. They feel marriage is "just a sheet of paper",

3. They can enjoy "a wife" through cohabitation; and,

4. They want to avoid divorce and its financial risks.

Call me old school, but I believe couples should not live together until after marriage or until, like Beyonce sang, "PUT A RING ON IT"...

It is one thing to make a life decision that may not be so smart. It is another thing to designate that decision as a crime.

What business is it of any government to tell people who they can or can't live with!

rich have you and your liberal friends already forgotten about Guantanamo Bay, CUBA(not saints cubanSalsa);

a jail, for life, of people that look like they probably will be responsible for something in the future?

yourGovernment, RichTaxDollars telling people what they can believe; AND tell people who they can or can't live with!

cohabitation is terribleABUSE for families, children and SOCIETY.

Society is terrorized GREATER than the GuantanomoSocial groups, than by the product of cohabitating households and we have to spend TRILLIONS$$$$, yearly to keep their lawLess products --- in Prision.............

Richard again you are on point... Even though I have reservations now regarding - SHACKING- still that is no reason to allow the government into our homes... but then as we look back, the government has always felt the need to micro-manage the family structure... abortion, education, health care....

next thing you know, the u.s. government will be dictating the number of children a household may contain....

in the words of Saint .... is this madness?

I say yes it is...... and there's more to follow....

AWESOME!! Now wasn't it sometime back they wanted to disqualify him because they felt he had an advantage over the runners because his prosthetic legs ((bounced)) which they felt gave him a leaping (lol) advantage.

now Richard... Human Implants are beneficial for health care providers... yes in case of a dire emergency.. patients medical history is there... bar code reader scans out the history....

but also, personal health care information is there.... HIPA Laws...

have you ever had an abortion?
have you ever had an STD?

not to mention other information that a parent may deem personal and has not informed their child....

I just believe that you have to tread lightly when it comes to invasion of one's privacy....

How about if the government just wants to wipe out a certain group of patients who are being treated for HIV...

naaa... count me out...

Cynthia--

Great point. Government intrusion at its worst.

Some states--and I think Florida is one of them--require doctors to read a prepared govt produced script to patients seeking abortions and require that they have sonograms whether their doctor recommend it or not.

Now that is government intrusion!

exactly... florida's policy making government is crucial especially when it comes down to health care.... as far as educational purposes... anyone getting an education in the state of florida (health science major) is great... the requirements are tough... but once I get my degree and license.... I'm going else where....

@robert, although it is not called SHOT GUN weddings any more not allowing one to chose their own mate is still shot gun wedding under another name... just called some other names ...ME, "I" CALL IT SANCTIONED SERIAL R-A-P-E...
MARRIAGE (WITH GOVERNMENT PERMISSION TO LIVE TOGATHER) ...DIVORCE (JUST TEH OPPOSIT??? YET STILL DETERMINED MORE BY GOVERNMENT THAN THE INDIVIDUAL AS IN WAITING PERIOD DIFFERENT IN EACH STATE, ECT.?????!!!?? )

Telling someone they can not about nor be a single mother, father is determining the number of children one can have only under a different name...

Saying abortion is wrong and yet say God is backing you to kill unborns / those who may have had children under the name of W-A-R is still abortions???? Even saying one is not to have s*x (at least with a fellow human being until married) is still preventing NATURAL RULES OF BIRTH IS STILL DICTATING HOW MANY CHILDREN ONE CAN / CAN NOT HAVE....

IS IT NOT??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????...only a little food for thought. lol (smile)
