DEAR GARDENERS: WINTER SEASONS & SWEET POTATO PIE (245 hits)

WINTER EDITION:
November 2011-February 2012

Dear Gardeners:

HELLO! It's time again for holidays and for most of those who garden outside, there is a strong felt need even though we want to do somethings outside we have to go inside to occupy our talents for the winter months. Our course, with tending to lawns for the last few days before winter, we have just about finished harvesting our veggies, taken in our potted plants, did our freezing and canning and planned out our tasks for next spring! Hopefully, if we're not lacking in any of those things you are about finished with vegetables and flower gardens for a season.

I was thinking if it wasn't for my fern and other houseplants I'd feel a little left in the cold. Ferns are funny timid plants, even if it's winter they'll die away if they aren't tricked into thinking they are in a tropical surrounding. I spray my fern with water on it leaves to simulate a rainy climate, and keep it by my sunniest house window; but I found my other houseplants likes that too.

As far as seasonings, it's a wonderful time during the winter to eat those jewels from your last spring and summer's gardens. Serving them at Thanksgiving and Christmas are delightful holiday dishes.

RING IN THE SEASONS....

Meanwhile, why not cook with seasonings? You can have fun experiencing the flavors of seasonings on your foods. There are many other seasonings other than season salt, and pepper. There is complete shelf rake of seasonings you can perk up your taste buds. Try them in a fresh winter crisp salad, over cream potatoes, sprinkle them over meats and poultry. All those eggs lovers can make a seasoned omelet that's a snap! Go to the store and shop around. You'll find spices and herbs everywhere. Don't forget add fresh herbs either. I can smell the kitchen's full of spices.

CUT ME A PIECE OF THAT SWEET POTATO PIE..

One harvest of the gardens you'll see on many tables in the South during the winter months and other places in the U.S. is the fresh home baked sweet potato pie. I like mine with the seasonings of nutmeg. That's yummy! There are so many ways sweet potatoes can be served. Mashed, whipped, baked, fries, whole and of course; even cookies and pies. And no family sweet potato pie is the same! Believe me I had different tastes of sweet potato pies!! My daddy would bake them right on the hearth of our fireplace when I was little. He abosulutely ruined me!!

I could have your reading for hours, but I don't want to have you yawning with complete boredum. So I'll leave you until February. Bake a sweet potato pie and while eating it think about gardening! And.. you'll think of me. ..By then I'll write you another letter because you are a Dear. Dearest Gardener.

TOODLES!

So tell me how does your gardens grow?

I'd surely love to know..

Mine grows with

lots and lots of
Love,

MIISRAEL
