Be In The Know: Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. What is it? (588 hits)

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition that results from repeated motions performed in the course of normal work or daily activities. Over time, this constant, unvarying motion may cause temporary or permanent damage to the tendons and nerves which are involved in producing the motion. One of the fastest growing occupational illnesses in the United States, carpal tunnel syndrome is prevalent in jobs requiring repeated motions (for example typing). It is frequently seen in individuals working in the mail service, on an assembly line, in construction, and in the computer industry.

What Cause It?
Repeated, limited range of motion causes the synovial sheath surrounding the median nerve to swell and fill with fluid. The swelling of the sheath puts pressure on the median nerve, causing pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and the fingers. Common activities that have been identified as causing carpal tunnel are:

- Repetitive bending, grasping, and twisting of the wrist
- The use of vibrating power tools
- Construction work
- Computer keyboarding or typing
- Playing video games or computer games
- Poor ergonomics (wrist posture, table height, angle of the elbows while working)

Carpal tunnel can also be affected by arthritis, diabetes, thyroid gland imbalance, excessive typing, obesity, hormonal changes associated with menopause, or pregnancy. Gender is also a factor since studies have found that females are at a higher risk than males.

What Are The Symptoms?
Many people with carpal tunnel syndrome have symptoms that gradually increase over time. Symptoms are hand and wrist pain, burning, and tingling. It can also include impaired nerve function with reduced strength.

What Can Be Done To Prevent Injury?
- Rest the hands periodically when performing repetitive motions.
- Do adequate warm-up and cool-down.
- Strengthen the hand and wrist muscles.
- Change the way repetitive movements are performed.

What Are The Treatment Options?
Treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome usually includes reducing or stopping the motions that cause the symptoms. It may also include:
- Wearing splints
- Cortisone injections
- Physical therapy
- Stretching and range-of-motion exercises
- Applying ice
- Using anti-inflammatory medications such as pain relievers or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)

In some cases, surgery is recommended to relieve symptoms and prevent permanent damage. Without treatment, repetitive stress injuries can result in the complete loss of function in the affected area. In its most severe form, carpal tunnel can become a lifelong disability that can prevent an individual from performing everyday duties.
