NOVEMBER 2011
15th Day
As of October 2011 one of the national milk banks is running low on funding. The funding is not necessarily all in monetary funds, but it’s breast milk funding. The Mother’s Milk is 37 year old bank located behind Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose operates out a small trailer and is one of 11 milk banks in the West nationwide. However, in late October of 2011 the milk bank needed additional contributions from women. Most of the breast milk is needed for babies at high risk and those infants who have trouble digesting foreign substances such as formula. The reason given for bank low supply was caused by increased prescriptions than the availability of donors to give. “The milk bank gave out 420,000 ounces of breast milk last year”, a spokesman said.. Other problems facing the shortages in this particular bank is it is the only one servicing from California. Since there are no milk banks in Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Maryland which locations of area hospitals they service and supply the demand has created a tremendous need for donors to give more.
