SPOTLIGHT: John T. Fisher
It was a April Sunday the day after Martin Luther King's assassination that a crowd of 6,000 gathered to mourn, remember and celebrate Dr. King's life. At that time, John Fisher was one of few whites were brave enough to stand up and be counted in reform for the civil rights movement. Mr. Fisher was a very young car salesman at that time, who stood before the gathering in a most historic day in Memphis, but was widely recognizable for his dedication to make changes for human and civil rights. A lifetime advocate of faith and equality he made a change to become a supporter of Dr. King's Dream of all people. Organizing ralleys he called "Memphis Cares" strung across racial lines to cause a calming effect on rioting and outbreaks. "This is a time to stand up and be counted." he said to the crowd. Mr. Fisher community leadership never once slacked in his dedication to Martin. His journey in this life ended on December 31, 2011 after an extended battle with lymphoma. His passing was at his home surrounded with family and friends. He was 77 years of age.
