MATA MET WITH BUS RIDERS

AFTER TO GAIN A UNION

A group of Memphians who are regular bus riders met with Memphis Area Transit Authorities town hall meeting on Saturday, January 28,2012 in order to voice their concerns and to also have talks of forming a union. The meeting announced the Memphis Bus Riders Union which is set to form February 18, 2012. The purpose behind the union is to build the movement of city bus riders to pursue changes that will be beneficial for transit improvements. Presently many of the MATA buses are in need of repairs and offer poor route services to many of it’s patronages. Along with complaints of customers include poor service and elevate rated fares for rides. The town meeting’s moderator asked why the MATA board couldn’t come up with money to improve operations when the poorest people are able to find $50 for bus passes? Another voice from the town meeting expressed that routes of buses reflect the Jim Crow era and only run routes for riders going east to west. According to the MATA website it’s reported that 40,000 people in Memphis and surrounding areas use public transportation. Paul Garner who is part of the union’s task form was quoted as saying: “We’ve had problems organizing in the past, but it’s time to change that.” “We’re the people and we can do this.” The group’s next transportation meeting is scheduled for Sunday, February 18, 2012 at the AFSCME Building, 485 Beale Street from 1:00 to 3 p.m.

The food franchise America’s Incredible Pizza Company located in Hickory Ridge Mall is celebrating Black History Month with a literature and arts contest. Theme for the contest is “Honoring Our African-American Inventors as They Became Superheroes.” The contest is open to students only from grades Kindergarten thru 12. All entrants must write a short essay about their favorite African-American inventor. Those who enter art work must also write a short essay to accompany the art. Deadline for entries is February 29, 2012. Announcement of the winners will be on March 12, 2012. Locals can call for more information on where to send the essays and art contact America’s Incredible Pizza Company manager at (901) 462-0517.

MEDICAL STUDENT GETS

A second year medical student at the U of Tennesse Health Science Center has been named the “American Academy of Family Physicans student liason” to the Student National Medical Association. Kentera Hix has had many works in background that add up maths for this honorary selection. Hix has her goal set on as liaison is helping local FMIG’s and SNMA chapters through ten SNMA regional conferences with hopes that Family Medical Interest Group [FMIG] provide programming for medical and pre-medical SNMA members. After all of these special duties she is committed to comprehensive care for all ages and ensuring that less fortunate communities have access to both medical care and services that support good health. “I’m interested in the social determinants of health and connecting that with medicine” quoted Hix in a local Memphis newspaper. Hix has many maths that equates her with being a participant in Memphis Healthy Churches and volunteering with the Christ Community Center and SNMA health fairs. After all that she a National Health Corps scholar and was named a Presidential Scholar at Tennessee State University. Hix has earned her degree in biology from Tennessee State University and Master of Public Health degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2009.
