It’s been a long time since the meteor shower in November 1833 when stars flew across the Alabama sky; fast forward to this time and Talladega College is making its mark with a star studded affair for Mother’s Day Weekend in the City.
Talladega College will be hosting its 95th Annual Alumni Reunion Weekend and its 137th Commencement Exercises. This year, the red carpet roll call will include famed R&B Artists, Betty Wright and Urban Mystic, plus Emmy Nominated Actor and Director, Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
On Friday, May 11th at the Talladega Superspeedway Dome, the 5th Annual President’s Scholarship Concert will begin at 8 p.m. Gold record winner and long-term R&B artist, Betty Wright will be the featured act. Also appearing in concert will be Urban Mystic and a guest appearance by Sweet Charlotte. Saturday activities will continue on the campus where the golden class and returning classes will celebrate their reunion activities.
The weekend will culminate with Talladega College graduating over 80 students on the campus, on Mother’s Day. This year’s Commencement speaker is Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who is most commonly known for his role as Theo on The Cosby Show. Currently, he’s been featured on BET’s original series, Reed Between the Lines, as an English professor and husband of the character played by Tracee Ellis Ross.
Warner has garnered great success with a twenty-five year illustrious career in acting, directing, and producing. Several years ago, he also acquired success in the music industry. His band, Miles Long, has performed in jazz festivals and opened for leading artists like Earl Klugh and the late Luther Vandross.
The Superspeedway Dome doors will open at 7 p.m., and the concert begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 11th. The Commencement Exercises will begin at 9 a.m., Sunday, May 13th on the campus. The graduation ceremony is free and open to the public. For tickets and more information, please call 256-761-6224.
