POLITICS NATION, May 9, 2012 -- Melissa Harris-Perry reminds us that May 10, 1866 is a date to remember in Civil Rights history. On that day the House of Representatives passed the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, granting citizenship to former slaves.
But it did so much more. It creates the first constitutional language establishing American citizenship for all people born or naturalized in this country.
And when President Obama too his courageous stand supporting marriage equality, it was a watershed moment for Civil Rights.
The civil rights of our fellow citizens should not be up for debate. The only basis for denying marriage equality is bigotry.
