Economic Opportunities For Black People
The Unity Movement has launched a new website (www.MyUnityMovement.com) that promotes unity and economic empowerment of the Black community. As with all Americans Black people want more opportunities to achieve success in life. “To often only the chosen few are able to make it while the vast majority are kept out of the opportunity loop because of a lack of connections, lack of capital or lack of information.
We must teach this current generation that working together with positive and successful people are the keys to achieving what you want out of life. The crabs-in-a-barrel mentality that has plagued us must be put to rest.“ Said Mike Moore, President/CEO Unity Movement.
The Unity Movement proposes solving this problem by uniting 2 million people who pledge to help and support each other. This type of support creates opportunities for people to start businesses, promote their churches and organizations, help their children with employment and education, and live much happier lives. “When you have a large group of like-minded people working together anything is possible.” Said Mr. Moore.
Members are given tools to allow them to help each other and also given simple ways to redirect their spending habits to support black businesses. These are two practical ways members are helping uplift the Black community. “When you have a large group of like-minded people supporting each other economically you are able to create a power-source for Black people to tap into. This is something that is sorely missing in the Black community now.” Said Mr. Moore.
This realization inspired Mr. Moore to start the Unity Movement in 2011. Currently, the Unity Movement has 3,500 members nationwide and is steadily growing. The organization’s website states “the only practical way to change the future of Black America is for Black people to help each other and use their collective buying power.” Black buying power is expected to reach$1.1 trillion by 2015, according to The State of the African- American Consumer Report, recently
released by Nielsen, a leading global provider of insights and analytics.
According to the 2011 Nielsen report:
• Black people have a buying power of nearly $1 trillion annually, if Blacks were a
separate country, they'd be the 16th largest country in the world. More buying powerthan Saudi Arabia or Switzerland.
• The percentage of Blacks attending college or earning a degree has increased from 25 to 44 percent for men and from 35 to 53 percent for women since the 2000 census. In an effort to uplift the black community the Unity Movement plans to harness the community’s buying power and intellect by: Conducting a national membership drive to unite two million people; Leveraging the Internet to allow Black people to easily help each other from any part of the world; Helping members shift one billion dollars from mainstream banks to Black-owned banks; Loaning money to Black consumers, businesses, churches and colleges; Helping
members open over 50,000 Black-owned businesses; and employing 100,000 Black people.
Henry Taylor of Texas, a Unity Movement member, said, “Black people have focused on everything from family to education, but economics drives everything in America. Thank God somebody has awakened to understand the key to success, which is Black people investing in themselves.”
