EXAMPLE OF COURAGE, for the Educated, nonRacist America

Rev. Jackson diminished O’Brien’s efforts and accomplishments by telling her that she isn’t Black enough. Numerous Black Planet readers have expressed that they too share Jackson’s sentiment; in that they feel she isn’t “Black enough” to represent Black people, while many others feel that the complexion of her skin or genetic background doesn’t set a precedence in her connection to the Black race.

Soledad O’Brien RESPONSE-----I am immediately upset and annoyed and the even more annoyed that I am upset and pissed off. If Reverend Jesse Jackson didn’t think I was black enough, then what was I? My parents had so banged racial identity into my head that the thoughts of racial doubt never crossed my mind. I’d suffered an Afro through the heat of elementary school. I’d certainly never felt white. I thought my version of black was as valid as anybody else’s. I was a product of my parents (black woman, white man) my town (mostly white), multiracial to be sure, but not black? I felt like the foundation I’d built my life on was being denied, as if someone was telling me my parents aren’t my parents.

i like to answer their questions that are a little too personal with --- "the chinese did it"?
just to end a thorny conversation.....forgive me

mind you ----- ALL or 98% that my schools have enrolled in 10 years have been from Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya or Somalia.........and 40% are related by marriage/family.

so one child asked me, "why dont you teach the 'blacks'?"

i asked, where are the 'blacks'------?

4-5 shouted out some parts of Africa................?

My......father began teaching fluid mechanics at..State University of New York ...

We grew up among well-educated white kids, with a nice home and good schools, and
pursued a life that seemed limitless. My parents hoped that the fact that

one of them was white and the other black would not define us.......

My siblings also went to Harvard, and now my sister Maria is a law professor, Cecilia is a corporate lawyer,

Tony heads a documents company, Estela is an eye surgeon and Orestes is an anesthesiologist.

We may have not blended into Long Island, but when it came to academic achievement we didn’t struggle.

La historia de María de la Soledad Teresa Marquetti O’Brien tiene el sazón perfecto para ser

demasiado caribeña, para ser perfectamente latina. Su madre nació en el corazón de la Habana Vieja,

Cuba en 1930 y se casó con un australiano, relación de la cual nació esta niña con un toque de allí

y otro de allá.

Para ponerle más sabor a la historia, el abuelo cubano de María de la Soledad reconoció el potencial

que tenía abrir un bar en la calle Obispo, una de las zonas más céntricas de la Habana Vieja, entonces

el perfecto refugio de poetas, músicos, políticos y locos. Posteriormente, ese lugar se convertiría en el

famoso “Floridita”, que se inmortalizó en la pluma del célebre escritor norteamericano Premio

Nobel de Literatura Ernest Hemingway.

Ésta es una parte de la historia personal detrás de Soledad O’Brien, la periodista que por años fue cara

de la cadena CNN y quien ahora impulsa su proyecto personal a través de Starfish Media Group,

..You Define America What Defines You...Who we are...What we think...How we look...How we live

(CNN) - Yaba Blay, Ph.D. created the (1)One Drop Project, a multiplatform endeavor that hopes to

challenge perceptions of black identity. Blay, a consulting producer for "Who Is Black in America?"

spoke to hundreds... not immediately be recognized as "black" based on how they look, including CNN

Anchor Soledad O'Brien....

Yaba Blay: How do you identify? Racially and culturally?

Soledad O'Brien: I’m black. I’m Latina. My mom is Cuban. Afro-Cuban. My dad is white and Australian.

And I think because of my job, often a question like "How do you identify?" is really not about the question.

It’s always "What side are you on?" "What perspective do you bring?"

Blay: I remember when "Black in America" first came out, and a lot of people being like

“Who is she and why is SHE doing this?”

You know, white people really have a luxury in that they get a range of stories, that they’re not defined

“Well you know that’s about them, not about me.”

Blay: Have you had that experience of people asking you, “What are you?”

O'Brien: Oh my God yes! All the time. ..... I used to take great offense – like immediately sort of get

annoyed, partly because I don’t think that came from a very good place.

I think I read it as sort of questioning my value and reasons for being wherever I was.

I’m a journalist, people are really just trying to understand...my job as a journalist is to educate

people about stories in a way and some of these stories I’m part of that story..

Blay: Why are there questions about why Soledad is doing "Black in America?"

O'Brien: Some of it is physical presentation...anchoring shows..specifically with African-Americans..

At screenings for "Black in America" I’ve heard people say,

“Well.. I never thought you were black until you did Katrina and then I thought you were black.”

And I’d say, “That’s so fascinating. What was it that made you think I was black?”...

But even just going back to the questions consistently, I thought it was just illuminating.

I thought it was just so fascinating to really open up a conversation about race.

Now we’re up to "Black in America 5" and we’re having that conversation.

Blay: So what makes a person black?

O'Brien: I certainly don’t think it’s skin color. And I certainly don’t think it’s how well you speak the

language. And I’m not sure I can answer that question thoroughly because my consciousness about

race was really implanted in me by my parents.

I would say I’m black because my parents said I’m black. I’m black because my mother’s black.

I’m black because I grew up in a family of all black people. I knew I was black because I grew up in

an all-white neighborhood. And my parents, as part of their protective mechanisms that they were

going to give to us made it very clear what we were.

My mother would say,

“Do not let anybody tell you you’re not black. Do not let anybody tell you you’re not Latina.”

And I remember thinking her comments were so weird, like "What is she talking about?"

But now I understand what she was going for. And I am very grateful for those conversations...

Who we are.."Who is black in America"

black or white can identify a skin color but can never describe a person.

Color id just a physical identification or outward appearance of a person so the question

"who are you,what are you or who is black? is more than color.

What I am is in other wards, the whole of me. And that includes my heart, my spirit and mind,

all of which can not be limited to color. By saying I am black or white is trying to describe who you

are with on percent of who actually you are.

I come from Africa, and my skin color is black, but myself, I am more than black so it is lack of

understanding of human values that may lead someone to describe themselves as being black or white.

.....in the Bible knowledge, skin color makes no sense.

Genesis 1:26-27 says;

And God created man in His image and likeliness. I we are created in God's image and likeliness,

then the right answer to the questions above should not be black or white.

If God is black, then all humans are black, and He is white, all humans are white.

Fortunately, God is neither black nor white therefore we are neither.

Black or white color identifies only skin color of a person and not the real person.

I am an image of God. I am a person with a black/white colored skin.

I am not a color. I am not black/white.

...many are not Christians and do not recognize the Bible.

Christians do not speak for the world.

But the sentiments that there is no such thing as race, that it is a cultural construct is absolutely true.

I will also add that "race" is a construct of the Western European, Christian mind;

..ancient people did not recognize race, make theories about it...

Western European Christians are responsible for creating categories of race, devising "scientific" theories

You only posted “FIVE” blogs since Aug 2019.

Robertpowell, come on man, we can do better then this! Do on Black In America, what you have been doing all of your life and that is to encourage people to learn, —-TEACH—- enlightenment.

Encourage all people to learn who they are. Together on this site, we can lift this sit of ours, to new levels.

This is something we can do together by promoting learning.
