NEW YORK CITY ,,,,Where to Get Warm, Fed and Sheltered (1474 hits)


NEW YORK CITY — After the devastation of Hurricane Sandy that has left many without shelter or food, New Yorkers are now bracing for cold temperatures and the possibility of more rain at the end of the coming week.
For those without food, blankets or water, the city has set up distribution points, which will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the following locations:

Queens:
Redfern Playground, at Beach 12th Street and Redfern Avenue
Hammel Playground, at Beach 84th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard
Highland Place, between Rockaway Point Boulevard and East Market Street
St. Francis De Sales Parish, 129-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard at Beach 129th Street
Beach 44th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard

Brooklyn:
Brighton Beach Avenue and Coney Island Avenue
West 25th Street and Surf Avenue
Coffey Park, at 85 Richards Street between King Street and Verona Street

Manhattan:
419 West 17th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues
Pitt Street and East Houston Street

Staten Island:
Mill Road and New Dorp Lane
Father Capodanno Boulevard and Hunter Avenue
Although the city closed dozens of temporary shelters on Thursday ahead of public schools reopening on Monday, there are still 14 temporary shelters available across the city for those in need.

Queens:
Hillcrest High School, at 160-05 Highland Ave.
Queens College, at 65-30 Kissena Blvd.
York College, at 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd.

Brooklyn:
Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School, 5800 20th Ave.
John Jay High School, at 237 7th Ave.
The Park Slope Armory, at 361 15th St. (for people with special medical needs only)
Brooklyn Tech High School, at 29 Fort Greene Place (for people with special medical needs only)

Manhattan:
George Washington High School, at 549 Audubon Ave.
The High School of Graphic Arts, 439 W. 49th St.
Hunter College, 695 Park Ave.
John Jay College, 445 W. 59th St. (for people with special medical needs only)

Staten Island:
Susan Wagner High School, 1200 Manor Rd.
Tottenville High School, 100 Luten Ave.

The Bronx:
Lehman College, 250 Bedford Park Blvd. W.
In preparation for the cold weather, the city has opened warming centers in most boroughs. Check the NYC.gov website for updates. As of Sunday, warming centers are located at:

MANHATTAN:
Lenox Hill Innovative Senior Center, 343 E. 70th St., Manhattan, 9 a.m to 5 p.m.
YMYWHA Innovative Senior Center, 54 Nagle Ave., Manhattan 9 a.m to 5 p.m.
Project Find Woodstock Senior Center, 127 W. 43rd St., Manhattan, 9 a.m to 5 p.m.
Good Companions Senior Center, 334 Madison Street, Manhattan, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
City Hall Senior Center, 100 Gold St., Manhattan, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Community Lounge, 155 East 22nd St., Manhattan, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

STATEN ISLAND:
Senior Guild Luncheon Program, 120 Anderson Ave., Staten Island, 9 a.m to 6 p.m.
Those who choose to remain at home are advised to wear loose layers, gloves and hats, drink warm liquids, and avoid using a gas stove or portable gas heater inside to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Also watch out for signs of hypothermia, including confusion or sleepiness, slowed or slurred speech, uncontrollable shivering and poor control over body movements.
For those experiencing anxiety and depression due to the effects of Sandy, the Mental Health Association of New York City is urging New Yorkers to call their crisis hotline, 800-LIFENET, for assistance.
