Alcorn student and Las Vegas, Nevada native Booker Reid was full of joy and hope today as he shared with President M. Christopher Brown II that his brother, Steven Horsford (D-NV), 39, won the new 4th Congressional District, defeating his opponent, Danny Tarkanian (R-NV) to become Nevada’s first African American US Congressman.
“I could not be more proud of my big brother, role model and mentor,” says Booker with an air of optimism in his tone as he explains the numerous sacrifices his brother has made for him, his family and the citizens of Nevada. “You don’t become Nevada’s youngest and first African American Senate Majority Leader without making sacrifices, tough decisions and working with individuals – no matter their party affiliation.”
Horsford is no stranger to the Alcorn campus. He spoke at the 18th Presidential Inauguration for Dr. Brown and his wife, Dr. Sonya Horsford, studied under Alcorn’s president.
“Alcorn sends best wishes to Congressman-elect Steven Horsford and his family,” says President Brown. “We are elated for our student, Booker, who learned so much through his volunteerism with his family during the campaign process.”
President Barack Obama’s endorsement of Horsford spoke also to his willingness to serve the people, “Steven Horsford is a tireless and outspoken advocate for Nevada’s middle class families. I’m proud to support him. He’s a good and decent American who has persevered through tough times, which is why he understands Nevada’s working class, and when elected, he will be a great representative of the people.”
