Dr. Kenneth B. Clark conducting the Doll Test, Harlem, New York (Gordon Parks, 1947) More information from The Library of Congress: In the “doll test,” psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark used four plastic, diaper-clad dolls, identical except for color. They showed the dolls to black children between the ages of three and seven and asked them questions to determine racial perception and preference. Almost all of the children readily identified the race of the dolls. However, when asked which they preferred, the majority selected the white doll and attributed positive characteristics to it. The Clarks also gave the children outline drawings of a boy and girl and asked them to color the figures the same color as themselves. Many of the children with dark complexions colored the figures with a white or yellow crayon. The Clarks concluded that “prejudice, discrimination, and segregation” caused black children to develop a sense of inferiority and self-hatred. 2013 FEED BACK !,,,below <<<

Rashida Abeni As a little girl I received both Black and White dolls. I didnt have a problem with the race but I did give them all African names..The same test is being given today via media programs, Nba, Nfl, music videos and even television commercials(if you pay close attention). Sadly, most of us are still failing.

Nia Graham I remember this and Thurgood Marshall references this as well. It's happening and has been since early times, we must continue to fight and work on ours and others. We have major obstacles. Just like we can come together and use word of mouth to ban something we can continue to fight and work toward the same comnon goal.

Paul Lorenzo Davis @ Velma that's the problem..parents waitint for someone else to teach their children....even to love themselves....kids should nt have to SEE image's of beautiful black people on TV or in Print media to feel good about themselves...Beautiful black people of all shades are all around them starting with the firsy people they see..Mom and Dad...

Paul Lorenzo Davis Im curious did this study have white children pick between the white and black dolls? If they did what was the outcome? Just an objective thought what if children picked something that was different just solely on the fact it wad something they weren't used to being exposed too...also did they do a control study....have them pick between a green or blue doll? Just curious as to how they set up this study.....

William Evans I can believe this phenomena still exists. @PAUL LORENZO DAVIS it's become obvious to me at least, tht you've never heard of one WILLIE LYNCH nd his SYSTEMS OF SELF PERPETUAL hatred upon the PEOPLES OF AFRICAN DESCENT IN THIS HEMISPHERE. Jenn Orozco Achenbach there are a few things wrong with this test... I don't know how many children they used in the study, don't know if it was a big enough population, they should have also tested white children, AND more importantly in my mind... they should have used both white and black administrators. Children tend to want to please, and the color of the tester (especially due to racial tension at that time) could well prove to be a strong variant. As psychologists investigating racial themes they should have known to take that into consideration.

Mary E Tyler @Zatiti, I admit to having not experienced racism first hand (except from the hateful side via my parents behavior which I entirely reject), and many things I do NOT understand. I obviously dont get the black doll thing. I struggle with the black hair thing. And I keep wondering why a child's preference or how a woman wants to look is so important? And much as I try, I just cannot grok it, and perhaps, because I can never BE black, I never will. But I WILL keep trying. @Natasha, racism and bigotry are in the intent, not in the experience. I fuss over babies of all races without preference because every baby is beautiful, wonderful and darling. I have noted, through experience, that only black mothers have treated me with suspicion, like their expectation of a fat, middle aged white woman is not positive. I can posit several reasons for their reactions. You can fill in the blanks as you will. You can call me racist and a bigot if you wish, but I am going to keep on trying not to be those things, even if I dont get the doll thing, or the hair thing. I think, having read a LOT of hateful stuff about white people--as if all white people are alike--on this very page, much less this thread, that often, it is very difficult to tell on sight who one's allies are and that everyone should make a better effort in that area. I dont think we can evrr truly overcome our cultural conditioning, but was can damn sure try. I am interested in race, and I talk about race, racism and yes, my own experiences. This doesnt make me a racist.

I rember being a little girl at the age of ten years old living in polock town, in camden N.J. on my way home from school a little girl was on the porch as i walked by said to her mother " look mommy she is all dirty".
