Congress Comes To Town At Talladega College (761 hits)

Talladega College will celebrate their spring semester Opening Convocation, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, on Thursday, January 24, 2013. The scheduled speaker for the event is Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell. The Annual Freedom March will begin in the parking lot of Sumner Hall on ML King, Jr. Drive where President Hawkins, the administration, faculty, staff and students will proceed together in unison and song to the venue.

Sewell is the U.S. Representative for the 7th District of Alabama. She is the first African American woman elected to Congress from Alabama. She also serves as the Democratic freshman class president, regional and senior Whip, and she sits on the House Committee on Agriculture and on the House Committee for Science, Space & Technology.

Sewell’s appointment to Congress was not her first ranking success. Rep. Sewell was the first black valedictorian of Selma High School. Afterwards, she attended Princeton University, Oxford University and Harvard Law School. After serving as a judicial law clerk in the Northern District of Alabama, she progressed to become a successful securities lawyer with the prestigious firm of Davis, Polk & Wardwell in New York City. In 2004, she returned to Alabama to pursue professional and civic quests. Prior to her government appointment, Sewell became one of the only black Alabama public finance lawyers where she had the opportunity to represent: the City of Selma, Dallas County Water Authority, Alabama colleges and universities, and many others.

The Talladega College Spring Opening Convocation will be held in The Tornado Alley Gymnasium at 11 a.m. on January 24. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Office of the President at 256-761-6212.
