The damage done to the slaves and their descendants (417 hits)

Everybody seems to feel like they can joke, minimize and trivialize our slavery past. You can find no one who minimizes the Jewish Holocaust as political posturing who are ever allowed to get away with it. Sometimes, those that do are heard from no more. We descendants of slaves should not allow our history to be forgotten and trivialized, either.

Today, on the floor of the United States House of Representatives, Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-TX, a black woman, made an insensitive and insulting reference of our slavery past in America. For it, she must apologize to us, her fellow descendants of slaves, for trivializing slavery and slavery's end by likening it to today's political maneuvering. Just because she is black, does not mean she should be allowed to get away with having said it. Being black, she knows better and ought to be ashamed of having said it, too.

Our history in this country has been brutal, demoralizing and has lasted for centuries. No repair of that damage to our people has ever been made to date.

She would do well to willingly demonstrate the sincerity of her apology by lobbying passage of H.R. 40, the House bill to study reparations for descendants of slaves in America.

The damage done to the slaves and their descendants has never been repaired and it should not be used as a political football for political gain.

Sheila Jackson Lee: I'm a "Freed Slave"
Rush Limbaugh.com ^ | February 14, 2013 | Rush Limbaugh
Posted on 2/14/2013 3:01:29 PM by Kaslin

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Do you know there is a freed slave serving in Congress? Grab audio sound bite number seven. Yep. There is a freed slave serving in the US House right now. A freed, f-r-e-e-d, slave is serving right now in the House of Representatives. Just to show you that slavery is still alive and kicking, we have a freed slave. (interruption)

Well, you say it's impossible? Listen.

Here is a portion of remarks made by the freed slave currently serving in the House of Representatives -- it happened yesterday -- on the House floor.

LEE: We are at the bone almost. And sequester that is across-the-board cuts will literally destroy us and put us in a recession. I don't want to hear the fact that the president is divisive. The President is leading and he has led well. The American people are listening. When are our friends on the other side of the aisle going to listen? I want to challenge this body to be the kind of "Lincolness attitude." As yesterday was the official birthday of President Lincoln, February 12, and although it was a tragic time in our history, I can assure you that it shows the greatest promise of America when people could come together and do something great. I stand here as a freed slave because this Congress came together.

RUSH: And the words there are Sheila Jackson Lee from Houston who stood there as a freed slave because this Congress came together. And if we could free Sheila Jackson Lee from slavery, then why can't we free every African-American? Why can't we let Chris Dorner go? Why did we have to keep him a slave in the LAPD? We've made this guy into what he turned out to be. We forced him to do this. And now he has shined the light of truth on the fact that this ongoing sin, this original sin, continues, unabated every day. Sheila Jackson Lee has been freed. Isn't it time to free the rest?

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: We're not having much luck here, folks. We've been doing exhaustive research in the last four minutes. We're trying to find out who owned and who sold Sheila Jackson Lee and what they got for her. She said on the floor of the House of Representatives ... she was standing there as a freed slave because this Congress came together. I didn't think they were coming together at all. She talked about the Congress during Lincoln, but anyway, she's a freed slave. Somebody had to own her, and we don't know who.

Obviously, you know, with the makeup of culture today, didn't have to be Houston, owner did not have to be where she lived. Could be owned by anybody. What if a drug company owned her? You know, what if Big Oil owned her and she didn't know about it. Somebody freed her, though. We will keep looking to try to find out who owned her, who sold her, and what they got. I have to tell you, though, in all candor, I think she looks pretty good for her age. She's gotta be over 110. You'd never know it.

Following a speech in which Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) praised the Civil War-era efforts that resulted in her being a "freed slave," Rush Limbaugh responded by asking "who owned and who sold" her.

The Hill reported that on the floor of the House of Representatives, Jackson Lee encouraged Congress to compromise in order to avoid automatic budget cuts. According to the article, "Jackson Lee suggested lawmakers should take inspiration from President Lincoln's leadership during the Civil War" before saying, "I stand here as a freed slave because this Congress came together. Are we going to be able to do it today to free America?" Limbaugh mocked Jackson Lee by "trying to find out who owned and who sold" her and "what they got for her":

LIMBAUGH: We're not having much luck here, folks. We've been doing exhaustive research in the last four minutes. We're trying to find out who owned and who sold Sheila Jackson Lee and what they got for her. She just said on the floor of the House of Representatives mere moments ago this morning, and she was standing there as a freed slave because this Congress came together. I didn't think they were coming together at all, but she talked about the Congress during Lincoln. But anyway, she's a freed slave. Somebody had to own her, and I -- we don't know who.

Obviously, you know, with the makeup of culture today it didn't have to be Houston that -- the owner did not have to be where she lived, she could have been owned by anybody. What if a drug company owned her? You know, what if -- what if big oil owned her and she didn't know about it? Somebody freed her, though. Oldgirl Ogunsusi I agree!! & there will never be peace for the CRIME of American Slavery.... Until America is brought to justice! That's why they assassinated Malcolm X.... Because he was on that mission. We have been brain washed thru civil rights... As if that was all that was needed. It was a horrible Crime! Worst than the holocaust if you ask me. & no lobbying in congress is going to amend it!

Darel Joseph So many do this not understanding we share ancestors and they are really disrespecting us in the name of self hate. I don't know what she said here, but I don't doubt it because she is quick to sell us out.
