STUDY FINDINGS SHOW YOUNGER WOMEN HAVING ADVANCED STAGES OF BREAST CANCER (441 hits)

FEBRUARY 2013
Day 27

The Journal of the American Medical Association has published a study with results surprisingly showing advanced breast cancer cases among women ages 25-29 years. The authors of the study reviewed database of cancer cases from 1976 to 2009. The breast cancer study concluded that advanced disease of cancer increased from between 3 cases per 100,000 during that time span. Authors of the study said about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and only 1 in 173 will be likely to develop cancer before age 40 years old. Presently routine screenings with mammograms is recommended for women older than 40 but not for those younger. However the study increased slightly among young women during the 34 year old analysis. The results have the medical community worried because tumors seem to be more aggressive among younger women than older ones. The study did not find reasons for the slight increase and has researches wanting to find the cause of the potential growth among women in the younger age brackets. Dr. Rebecca Johnson lead author of the study quoted “The change might be due to some sort of modifiable risk factor, like a lifestyle change or exposure to some sort of a cancer-linked substance. Other experts suspect it could be factors of delaying pregnancy, obesity or drinking alcohol. These were suspicious findings are inconclusive and the medical team feels there should be more research to find some reasonable explanation for the increases. The advanced cancer stages among younger women causes younger women to be much more aware of their family’s history, and to be informed of any past health prognosis in related family of women. Still, there have been no suggestions or input for younger women under 25 to have early breast exams.

"Please try to keep a good health check if at all possible!"
