Facebook has been very busy lately. Not only have they developed a mobile app that will track your whereabouts and will be released in a couple of weeks, they have just changed the news feed too. I’m a user who has been concerned with the ever changing privacy policies and now have another reason to be more cautious when it comes to the social network. This new smartphone application will be tracking you even when the app is not running. How freaky is that?! Just another “big brother” to worry about! It’s no longer the eye in the sky, it’s the phone in your pocket, keeping detailed tabs on your location. Facebook loosely claims the app was created to help users locate friends in the surrounding area by broadcasting those friends location. Now, I don’t know about you, but I generally call my friends if I need to know where they are. This might be a good app for parents or borderline creepy stalker. Even if you have the old mobile application on your phone the one where users can just “check in” once the new application is implemented it will start to follow your every move. I deleted my facebook mobile application two days ago, before the program goes live. I suggest you do the same if this is a concern for you. Personally I don't use any of their apps. There was something I heard about them that convinced me not to use them. Can't remember what offhand but I'll check into it.

Facebook Application Dangers

Besides allowing you to keep in contact with friends and business contacts, Facebook also has a wide range of applications available. These applications include everything from games to family trees and quizzes; however, because these programs are not created by Facebook, but rather by third-party developers, there is a risk involved in using them. If you or your employees use Facebook at work, the dangers involved with using applications should be made clear to everyone.
Access to Private Information
Before you can start using an application on Facebook, you must first allow it access to your basic information. If you do not allow this, you will not be able to use the application. In their rush to start using an application, people do not take the time to always read the permission request so that they can see exactly what privileges they are granting the application. There is always a danger that whoever created the application will use the information that they gain from your Facebook profile for nefarious purposes, such as identity theft or fraud. Always read the permission request and make sure that you are not unwittingly giving the application access to more information than what you feel comfortable with.
Spam and Virusses
One of the most commonly requested permissions from Facebook applications is to send you emails. Some applications use email to keep you updated on new additions or features, but there is a danger that your email will be added to a spam mailing list. Links in these emails can point to external websites with malicious content that can possibly infect your computer. In a business environment, this can lead to a loss of productivity, as the computer has to be scanned and cleaned. Trojans and backdoor programs that might be hidden in the emails or links also put any confidential client information at risk from hackers.
Danger to Friends and Coworkers
When using an application on Facebook, it not only has access to your friend list but in most cases you also give it permission to post on your behalf. Because you have no control over the links and content that is posted by the application, this can lead to other people on your friend list being misled. A common tactic by rogue applications is to post notifications stating that they have been tagged in a photo by you, or that you are recommending a website to them. When they click on these links, they are taken to an external website, which can either use phishing techniques to gain access to their personal information or expose them to malware.
Personal Safety
In most cases, the people that are on your Facebook friends list are people that you know in real life but some applications encourage you to add strangers to your list in order to gain in-app rewards. This has the obvious risk of exposing information that you might wish to keep private unless you take the added precaution of organizing your friend list and setting separate permissions for different groups. If personal information, for example, your address, is displayed on your profile, it can be dangerous to share status updates such as your whereabouts if you have strangers on your friends list.

I use social media like facebook for my business so I can't extract myself completely from it. One day, I'll live off the grid raising livestock like my great grandmother. I currently have two chickens so that's a start.

I have been signing petitions online regarding the same. I don't believe the govt. has the right to infringe on my civil liberties in the name of fighting the war of terror, because I believe its unconstitutional.
Hey, off topic though ... did you like the good ole fashion "Filabuster" by Ran Paul? It brought back memories for me of the movie, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" played by actor Jimmy Stewart.
We all have to stay vigilant and make sure that we protect our Constitution and our priviledges even against FaceBook especially since the CEO is so young and in my opinion ... unseasoned in the things of life.

Please sign the petition telling Congress it's time to end tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy. Click here to sign.
Despite Facebook reporting profits of over $1.1 billion in 2012, the company is expected to pay no federal or state income taxes. In fact, Facebook will receive net tax refunds totaling $429 million, because tax deductions on executive stock options can be written off as salary deductions.
Less than two weeks after the sequester has officially gone into effect, bringing with it painful budget cuts, layoffs, and furloughs for employees, this is a perfect example of how the deficit and spending cuts are driven by loopholes that allow corporations and wealthy Americans to get all the breaks.
Congress desperately needs to reform the tax code so that the most successful among us pay their fair share.
