Viola Davis of "The Help" Comes to TSU April 23rd (1761 hits)

Arrangements have been finalized for critically revered film, television and theater and Academy Award nominated actress Viola Davis to visit Texas Southern University Tuesday, April 23rd at 7 p.m. in Sawyer Auditorium.

Best known for her roles in “Doubt” and “The Help”, Davis is coming to TSU for an up close and personal conversation with students, alumni and community. Deborah Duncan of KHOU’s Channel 11 will lead the interview with Davis.

Ms. Davis is in the initial development stages to take on the role of both the star and producer in the life story of Barbara Jordan in a feature film that will be based on the 2000 biography Barbara Jordan: American Hero, written by Mary Beth Rogers.

Texas Southern University alumna and pioneer of many firsts, Barbara Jordan was the first African American to serve in the Texas Senate since Reconstruction, the first black woman elected to Congress from the South, and the first to deliver the keynote address at a national party convention.

Along with her role as ‘Aibilene Clark’ in “The Help”, Davis won the NAACP Image Award for best actress in the film “Won’t Back Down” in which she co-starred alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal and Holly Hunter. Along with her Academy Award, Golden Globe Award and British Academy Film Award nominations, Davis earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for “Outstanding Performances by a Female in a Leading Role” and a Critics’ Choice Award for “Best Actress” for her performance as ‘Aibileen Clark’. Davis is currently filming Alcon Entertainment’s, “Prisoners” opposite Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Terrence Howard.
