U.N. Chief Hates the White House's Plan to Arm Syria's Rebels

U.N. Secretary Ban Ki moon registered concern today about foreign supply of weapons to Syrian combatants, placing the top U.N. official at odds with the Obama administration at odds as it pressing ahead with plans to arm the rebels.
"I have been making it clear consistently clear that providing arms to either side would not address the current situation," he said in a press conference at U.N. headquarters. "There is no such military solution. Only a political solution can address the issue sustainably.", Ban initially misspoke saying that "stemming the flow of arms to either side would not be helpful."
Ban did not directly criticize the U.S. decision to step up its support for the armed opposition, he made it clear that he believes it will complicate efforts to promote efforts to negotiate a political solution to the crisis.
"There is no military solution to this conflict, even if both the government and the opposition, and their supporters, think there can be, " Ban said. "The military path points directly towards the further disintegration of the country, destabilization of the region and inflammation of religious and communal tensions."
Citing concern about the increasing pace of killing in Syria, Ban said that he is striving "very hard" to pave the way for a U.S.-Russian sponsored peace conference on Syria in Geneva. U.S. and Russian planning for the conference-which was initially planned for late May-has been stalled over differences about who should attend the conference and who would represent the combatants.
Ban's remarks came shortly after he received a letter from the United States detailing new evidence it claims indicates that the Syrian authorities likely used the nerve agent sarin on a small scale. Ban voiced appreciation for the U.S. submission, but he cautioned that "any information on the alleged use of chemical weapons cannot be ensured without convincing evidence of the chain of custody." Establishing that, he explained, would require the U.N. chemical weapons team, be granted access to Syria so he can "collet its own samples and establish the facts."
On March 20, Syrian authorities initially invited the U.N. chief to establish an "impartial" chemical weapons team to investigate its claims that Syrian rebels used chemical weapons in the village of Khan al Assal near Aleppo. Ban quickly established a team, headed by a Swedish chemical weapons expert Ake Sellstrom, to lead the investigations. But negotiations over access bogged down after Ban agree to a joint request by Britain and France to expand the inquiry to examine rebel claims that Syrian authorities used chemical weapons.
Ban and Susan E, Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, today pressed Syria to relent and to allow the chemical weapons team into the country. "We think it's high time that that access be granted," Rice said in her final press appearance at U.N. headquarters as U.S. ambassador.
Russia, meanwhile, has expressed skepticism about the veracity of American claims. "The contacts we have with American experts did not convince our experts that that in fact the information which was presented was convincing enough to come to a definitive conclusion that government forces used chemical weapons," Russia's U.N. envoy, Vitaly Churkin told reporters.

Statement by Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes on Syrian Chemical Weapons Use
At the President’s direction, the United States Government has been closely monitoring the potential use of chemical weapons within Syria. Following the assessment made by our intelligence community in April, the President directed the intelligence community to seek credible and corroborated information to build on that assessment and establish the facts with some degree of certainty. Today, we are providing an updated version of our assessment to Congress and to the public.
The Syrian government’s refusal to grant access to the United Nations to investigate any and all credible allegations of chemical weapons use has prevented a comprehensive investigation as called for by the international community. The Assad regime could prove that its request for an investigation was not just a diversionary tactic by granting the UN fact finding mission immediate and unfettered access to conduct on-site investigations to help reveal the truth about chemical weapons use in Syria. While pushing for a UN investigation, the United States has also been working urgently with our partners and allies as well as individuals inside Syria, including the Syrian opposition, to procure, share, and evaluate information associated with reports of chemical weapons use so that we can establish the facts and determine what took place.
Following a deliberative review, our intelligence community assesses that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons, including the nerve agent sarin, on a small scale against the opposition multiple times in the last year. Our intelligence community has high confidence in that assessment given multiple, independent streams of information. The intelligence community estimates that 100 to 150 people have died from detected chemical weapons attacks in Syria to date; however, casualty data is likely incomplete. While the lethality of these attacks make up only a small portion of the catastrophic loss of life in Syria, which now stands at more than 90,000 deaths, the use of chemical weapons violates international norms and crosses clear red lines that have existed within the international community for decades. We believe that the Assad regime maintains control of these weapons. We have no reliable, corroborated reporting to indicate that the opposition in Syria has acquired or used chemical weapons.
The body of information used to make this intelligence assessment includes reporting regarding Syrian officials planning and executing regime chemical weapons attacks; reporting that includes descriptions of the time, location, and means of attack; and descriptions of physiological symptoms that are consistent with exposure to a chemical weapons agent. Some open source reports from social media outlets from Syrian opposition groups and other media sources are consistent with the information we have obtained regarding chemical weapons use and exposure. The assessment is further supported by laboratory analysis of physiological samples obtained from a number of individuals, which revealed exposure to sarin. Each positive result indicates that an individual was exposed to sarin, but it does not tell us how or where the individuals were exposed or who was responsible for the dissemination.
We are working with allies to present a credible, evidentiary case to share with the international community and the public. Since the creation of the UN fact finding mission, we have provided two briefings to Dr. Åke Sellström, the head of the mission. We will also be providing a letter to UN Secretary General Ban, calling the UN’s attention to our updated intelligence assessment and specific incidents of alleged chemical weapons use. We request that the UN mission include these incidents in its ongoing investigation and report, as appropriate, on its findings. We will present additional information and continue to update Dr. Sellström as new developments emerge.
The President has been clear that the use of chemical weapons – or the transfer of chemical weapons to terrorist groups – is a red line for the United States, as there has long been an established norm within the international community against the use of chemical weapons. Our intelligence community now has a high confidence assessment that chemical weapons have been used on a small scale by the Assad regime in Syria. The President has said that the use of chemical weapons would change his calculus, and it has. Our decision making has already been guided by the April intelligence assessment and by the regime’s escalation of horrific violence against its citizens. Following on the credible evidence that the regime has used chemical weapons against the Syrian people, the President has augmented the provision of non-lethal assistance to the civilian opposition, and also authorized the expansion of our assistance to the Supreme Military Council (SMC), and we will be consulting with Congress on these matters in the coming weeks. This effort is aimed at strengthening the effectiveness of the SMC, and helping to coordinate the provision of assistance by the United States and other partners and allies. Put simply, the Assad regime should know that its actions have led us to increase the scope and scale of assistance that we provide to the opposition, including direct support to the SMC. These efforts will increase going forward.
The United States and the international community have a number of other legal, financial, diplomatic, and military responses available. We are prepared for all contingencies, and we will make decisions on our own timeline. Any future action we take will be consistent with our national interest, and must advance our objectives, which include achieving a negotiated political settlement to establish an authority that can provide basic stability and administer state institutions; protecting the rights of all Syrians; securing unconventional and advanced conventional weapons; and countering terrorist activity.

Syrian opposition denounces Bashar al-Assad's election as a sham
Amid more violence and calls for a boycott, only a trickle of voters turn out in restive provinces

Syrians went to the polls yesterday in the country's first multi-party parliamentary elections in 50 years, as swathes of the country went on strike and barely a trickle of voters was reported at ballot boxes in restive provinces.
The vote for 250 seats in the Syrian parliament – contested by more than 7,000 candidates – has been billed by the regime as a milestone that shows its commitment to reform. However, opposition groups had called for a boycott, writing it off as a sham that would do little to loosen President Bashar al-Assad's grip on power or bring any change to a 14-month old conflict that has claimed more than 9,000 lives.
The streets of the capital, Damascus, were adorned with all the trappings of a heated campaign race, but despite a referendum in February that paved the way for parties other than the ruling Baath Party to participate, there has been little political debate or sign of anyone standing on a platform that opposes the government.
The Syrian parliament has long been seen as little more than a rubber stamp for the Assad regime.
"I haven't seen anyone talking about a real programme for the next four years," said a 28-year-old from Damascus. "I didn't vote because nobody represents me and I don't think it would make any difference if I did."
State television ran blanket coverage, showing queues outside some polling stations as they opened at 7am. In one Damascus polling station, authorities said that 137 people had voted in the first three hours, but reporters from the Reuters news agecny observed only three people voting there in 40 minutes.
Some electors said they hoped the process would bring change. Hind Khalil, 23, a voter in Damascus told Reuters she would vote for some independent candidates as well as members of the new parties. "They have fresh ideas," she said. "I hope they will work for the welfare of the country and for combating corruption and bribery."
While the regime can expect some of its strongest support in the capital, in war-ravaged cities like Homs and Hama activists said there was little sign of elections at all, saying most residents had boycotted the vote.
"There is fighting and shooting and the humanitarian conditions are really terrible; nobody is even talking about the elections," said Saif Al Arabi, a member of the Homs Revolutionary Council. "Even if we did want to vote there are definitely no ballot boxes in opposition neighbourhoods."
The southern province of Deraa, the birthplace of the uprising, and the opposition stronghold of Hama were among areas that shut down for a general strike yesterday to protest against the vote. A video posted online shows the deserted streets and shuttered shops in Hama's centre, while another showed a similar scene in the village of Qalaat al-Madeeq.
The elections, originally scheduled to take place in September but postponed for President Assad to launch a "reform" process, took place against amid continued violence.
As the polls opened, fierce clashes were reported in neighbourhoods of Homs, where activists said government forces had launched an assault to rout rebel fighters. Three were killed in Deir ez-Zor, near the Iraqi border, where clashes took place for a second day, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, putting the death toll across the country at seven.

Bashar Hafez al-Assad (Arabic: بشار حافظ الأسد Baššār Ḥāfiẓ al-ʾAsad, Levantine pronunciation: [baʃˈʃaːr ˈħaːfezˤ elˈʔasad]; born 11 September 1965) is the President of Syria and Regional Secretary of the Syrian-led branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party. He has served as President since 2000, when he succeeded his father, Hafez al-Assad, who had ruled Syria for 30 years prior to his death.
Al-Assad graduated from the medical school of the University of Damascus in 1988, and started to work as a physician in the army. Four years later, he attended postgraduate studies at the Western Eye Hospital, in London, specializing in ophthalmology. In 1994, after his elder brother Bassel, the heir apparent to their father, was killed in a car crash, Bashar was hastily recalled to Syria to take over Bassel's role. He entered the military academy, and took charge of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon in 1998. In December 2000, Assad married Asma Assad, née Akhras. Al-Assad was elected as President of Syria in 2000 and 2007, unopposed each time.[1][2]
Initially seen by the domestic and international community as a potential reformer, this expectation ceased when he ordered a mass crackdown and military sieges on protesters during the Arab Spring, which gave way to the events of the Syrian civil war.[3] The domestic Syrian opposition and large parts of the wider international community have subsequently called for al-Assad's resignation from power.[4]

Western diplomats say Putin is unlikely to soften his support for Assad at the G-8 summit, given Russia’s strategic interest in preserving the Syrian leader in power and in facing down a U.S.-backed policy initiative to oust him.
Alexander Lukashevich, spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said at a briefing Friday in Moscow that reports about the American decision to send arms to the Syrian opposition “cannot fail to be perceived with serious concerns.”
“They prompt, among other things, the idea that the U.S. effort to ensure the due representation of the opposition at the prepared international conference will not gain any traction,” he said.

Kuwait was recognized as a separate province from Iraq and given autonomy under Ottoman suzerainty in the draft Anglo-Ottoman Convention, however this was not signed before the outbreak of the first World War. The border was revisited by a memorandum sent by the British high commissioner for Iraq in 1923, which became the basis for Kuwait's northern border. In Iraq's 1932 application to the League of Nations it included information about its borders, including its border with Kuwait, where it accepted the boundary established in 1923.[5]
The 1920s and 30s saw the collapse of the pearl fishery and with it Kuwait's economy. This is attributed to the invention of the artificial cultivation of pearls.
The discovery of oil in Kuwait, in 1938, revolutionized Kuwait's economy and made it a valuable asset to Britain. In 1941 on the same day as the German invasion of Russia (22 June) the British took total control over Iraq and Kuwait (the British and Russians would invade the neighboring Iran in September of that year).

The problem with revealed religions is how do you know the revelation, a human speaking for God, is authentic? The only revelation of the Creator I can trust is what is given to me directly by my Creator. I do believe that can involve human agency sometimes, but the mind the Creator gave me is the final judge, otherwise why did the Creator give me a mind?

In any event, though I can no longer read Hebrew, all standard English translations working from the Hebrew translate 1:26 using the plural, so I assume that's what the Hebrew uses. Am I wrong?

24. The dwellers of Paradise - those who earned it through their Faith and their deeds of righteousness will, on that Day, have the best abode, and have the fairest of places for repose.
25. Remember the Day when the heaven shall be rent asunder with clouds, and the angels will be sent down, with a grand descending.
26. The sovereignty on that Day will be the true sovereignty, belonging to the Most Gracious (Allâah), and it will be a hard Day for the disbelievers those who disbelieve in Monotheism.
27. Remember the Day when AlZâlim (evil doer, oppressor, polytheist, pagan) will bite at his hands, he will say: "Oh! I regret not taking a path with the Messenger Mohamed.
28. "Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a Khalîl (an intimate friend)!
29. "He indeed led me astray from AlQur’âan after it had come to me. And Shaitân (Satan) is to man ever a deserter in the hour of need."

In it is the first mention, that I know of, of the resurrection of the dead.
2 Maccabees 7:9
And when he was at his last breath, he said, "You accursed wretch, you dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws."
Would you say that this is Allah's original revelation, in written form, of the resurrection of the dead?

Happy Solstice Irma! It's curious we don't have a festival for this day. I spent the day contemplating the wonders of the universe, and immersed in a Robin Cook novel, Chromosome 6. Now I am getting ready for the local meeting here at 11:00. Maki has been very encouraging and I'm sure I'll be meeting some new people today. Maki has been teaching me a little Japanese too. We all knew this was going to happen, and that it does regularly happen, at this time of year. The reason we know is because it is part of the Designer's design. This quote from Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason, The Complete Edition, is about eclipses but the principle he's teaching also applies to solstices. This shows that man is acquainted with the laws by which the heavenly bodies move. But it would be something worse than ignorance, were any Church on earth to say that those laws are a human invention. It would also be ignorance, or something worse, to say that the scientific principles by the aid of which man is enabled to calculate and foreknow when an eclipse will take place, are a human invention. Man cannot invent a thing that is eternal and immutable; and the scientific principles he employs for this purpose must be, and are of necessity, as eternal and immutable as the laws by which the heavenly bodies move, or they could not be used as they are to ascertain the time when, and the manner how, an eclipse will take place."

Tomorrow night, Sunday, June 23rd, we can enjoy the supermoon! The supermoon is a full moon when the moon is closest to Earth. Tomorrow's will be the biggest and brightest of the year. The image above is of the supermoon of 2012 taken in Sydney, Australia.
I remember when I still used to go to church I would often look out the window at a tree and see it moving in the breeze and see the birds landing in it and taking off from it. It helped me realize that by being in church you're cutting yourself off from the real word of God - Intelligence based Nature and all its beauty and magnificence.

Back to my meditation on the Solstice.
The marijuana plant could not do what it does without the solstice.
In the days leading up to the solstice, as the length of the day increases, the plant is in its vegetative state, putting all its energy into growing. After the solstice, as the length of the day decreases, at some point before the Autumn equinox (depending on the variety), the plant will start to put its energy into flowering.
As the flower matures it produces the wondrous cannabinoids that are then received by the cannabinoid receptors that have evolved in the human body.
There are two types of receptors, CB1 and CB2, and the primary cannabinoids are THC and CBD. The CB1 receptors are in the brain and nervous system and bind to THC. This accounts for the psychoactive effects. The CB2 receptors are in certain cells of the immune system and bind with CBD. It's the CBD that has allowed me to reduce my insulin intake by 2/3.
There are other cannabinoids as well, but not as much is known about them, and even CBD needs much further research.
But of course there are those who insist this wonder of Nature is an evil thing.

The meeting today Irma was a perfect celebration of the solstice.
The study subject was friendship, and I was inspired by the children. As I sat there watching the little girl next to me drawing circles with crayons, a family walked in with three more children and the mother when her turn came said that her children were her best friends. When my turn came I picked up the last picture the little girl next to me had drawn, smiling sun, a stick person... I showed it around the room and said I agreed, a child's innocence is our best guide to friendship.
My new friend Maki also goes by Sakura and this is how she introduced herself as everyone took their turn. It means Cherry Blossom.
