STEM education = emancipation. Roughly 95% of slaves were functionally illiterate; the same percentage of all Americans in '96 were scientifically illiterate ("The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark," Carl Sagan). I see no evidence this has changed; it may have worsened, and quite deliberately so. The illiterate historically have always been easier to control.
