A Positive Image of Marriage & Family

Were it not for the countless contributions and sacrifices of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Black and Married With Kids would not exist. It is because of the sacrifices made by Dr. King and countless other civil rights leaders that we are able to use this platform to strengthen families within our community.

In honor of Dr. King, and all he did to fight for our civil rights, we want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to his legacy. A husband and father of four, Dr. King dedicated his life to fighting for what he believed was right and to service. That’s why we believe the best way to honor his legacy is by serving others.

Today is the national holiday that marks the observance of Dr. King’s birthday, and it is also the MLK Day of Service. Not only should we take this day as an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s powerful legacy, but we should also view it as chance to reflect on how far we, as a people and a nation, have come and how much farther we need to go.

Here are a number of sites that can help you discover great opportunities for you and your family to serve. Dr. King once said,

“The time is always right to do what is right.”

We couldn’t agree more. Let’s all remember what Dr. King stood for and take a moment to do what is right.

United We Serve – A great site that makes it very easy to locate service opportunities simply by inputting your location and your interests. The site also offers toolkits to help you create your own service projects.

We Give Books – This program partners with a number of organizations and provides children across the world with an opportunity to read countless books – an opportunity they otherwise would not have. Considering how much Dr. King valued an education, we think helping kids fall in love with reading is something that would make him proud.

NAACP – Becoming a member of the NAACP is a great way to remain connected to social justice issues, in your community and nationwide, which may need your support. Joining allows you to serve your community on an ongoing basis.

Common Cents – Common Cents is a great organization because they focus on developing and implementing service projects for young people, and the organization was actually co-founded by a 4-year-old.

Global Giving - If you don’t have a ton of time to dedicate to a service project at this point in your life consider Global Giving, a charity fundraising site that give you a chance to support non-profits and social entrepreneurs from across the world.

Volunteer Match – Another great site to help you match your interests and passions with causes that need your help in your area.

BMWK – how do you plan to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today? What do you do to get your kids involved and to teach them about MLK Jr.’s legacy?

Dr. King was about the sovereignty of Black Americans direct and indirect descendents of plantation slaves.

There are no 6 ways to honor Dr. King’s legacy especially marriage. You are making up distractions to what Dr. King was about and that is how people are unintentionally misled.

Dr. King’s legacy stands on the Promise Land he said he saw and I came along to second the motion.

Marriage is meaningless with out true sovereign freedom in a country of our own.

Hello Saint,

You say that I am entitled to my own opinion. I have made it clear that I don’t offer opinions. Everything I say is a fact.
In making my point that you are wrong that Dr. King had nothing to do with marriage. Dr. King was all for making the lives of Black Americans better.
I mentioned Dr. King’s last speech had nothing to do with marriage. He said he seen Black Americans in our Promise Land. Dr. King mentioned nothing about marriage.

What I am saying is not an OPINION, but facts knucklehead!

What you are saying about Dr. King is not right! It is a distraction and mis-leading to the Black youths. And, you need to stop it!

What you are saying about Dr. King and marriage is your fu*king OPINION because you can back-up what you are saying. Nowhere in Dr. King’s speeches did he connect Civil Rights with marriage.
