(June 9, 2014). Public school students in two more states will no longer have to conform to Common Standards. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley signed a law that will replace the national initiative with state-developed standards and tests by the 2015-16 school year. The Palmetto state is the second to block the program. Indiana left the program earlier this year.
Just last week, a third state joined the list. Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed a law repealing Common Core. It mandates the State Board of Education to create new, more rigorous standards by August 2016. In the interim, schools will revert to the state standards used from 2003 to 2010.
This is great for children as well as “America’s constitutional heritage,” said Emmett McGroarty, Director of Education at the American Principles Project (APIA).
Created in 2010, Common Core provides a series of guidelines showing what students should know about math and English from kindergarten to 12th grade. Many education experts say it’s a dangerous path for schools to follow because it leaves parents out of the educational process.
The law will make it possible for South Carolina parents and other citizens “to reclaim their rightful control over education,” said Jane Robbins, APIA senior fellow. “We look forward to South Carolina’s adoption of standards that are demonstrably superior to Common Core.”
The laws in Oklahoma and South Carolina leave 43 states, the District of Columbia, four territories and the Department of Defense Activity under Common Core. Those that never adopted the standards include: Alaska, Nebraska, Texas and Virginia. Minnesota adopted in only one subject.
“Unfortunately, federal overreach has tainted Common Core,” Fallin explained. “President Obama and Washington bureaucrats have usurped Common Core in an attempt to influence state education standards. The results are predictable. What should have been a bipartisan policy is now widely regarded as the president’s plan to establish federal control of curricula, testing and teaching strategies.”
