Brazil To Substantially Increase Exports of Meat, Dairy To Customs Union To Russia (217 hits)

BUENOS AIRES, August 8 (RIA Novosti) – The decision of the Russian agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor to allow about 90 Brazilian agricultural producers access to the Russian market will help Brazil substantially increase its exports of meat and dairy products to the Customs Union, Brazilian Agriculture Minister Neri Geller said.

On Thursday, the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry announced that on August 6, Rosselkhoznadzor allowed 89 Brazilian suppliers of meat and dairy products on Russian market. Another two suppliers are expecting to receive their permissions in the coming days.

“Therefore Brazil will substantially increase its meat and dairy products exports to the countries of the Customs Union, by that strengthening the international partnership on agriculture and the relations of trust and friendship between the two countries [Russia and Brazil],” the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry quoted Geller as saying in a statement released August 7.

According to the document, Russia already is the principal destination of Brazilian beef and pork exports. In 2013 Brazil supplied Russia with 303,000 tons of beef worth $1.2 billion and 134 tons of pork worth $412 million. In total, Brazil exported $2.7 billion worth of agricultural products to Russia in 2013.

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) — Russia’s agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, said it will hold consultations on Thursday with several Latin American countries on expansion of their food supplies to Russia.

"Meetings with diplomats from Ecuador, Brazil, Chile and Argentina will be held on August 7. They will focus on possibility of expanding food supplies from these countries to the Russian market," the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree earlier on Wednesday banning imports of agricultural and food products from countries that imposed sanctions on Russia for one year.

Rosselkhoznadzor said it has lifted restrictions on Brazilian producers which have shown their interest towards boosting supplies of dairy products to Russia.

The Brazilian side on Tuesday at talks with Russian representatives said it planned to expand supplies of meat, by-products and dairy products to Russia. Brazil said it was ready to provide guarantees on compliance with the demands and the norms of the Customs Union.

"Taking into consideration the results of the negotiations and the interest shown by Russian importers, and accepting the guarantees of Brazil’s veterinary service, Rosselkhoznadzor believes it is possible to lift temporarily restrictions on a range of Brazilian enterprises engaged in livestock production," the watchdog said.

The announcement comes after President Putin ordered the government on Tuesday to think of counter-measures to the most recent of EU and US economic penalties. Putin urged the cabinet to make sure that the steps taken to support domestic manufacturers are "without detriment to consumers."

Moscow has stated repeatedly that imposing sanctions against Russia will have a negative effect on the economies of countries that impose them and called the language of sanctions counterproductive.
