Thousands of commuters in New York were disrupted when a massive theft of copper cable from train tracks were stripped. The theives took 500 feet of cable from the Metroplitan Transportation Authority and suspened train services completely between Rockaway Blvd. and Broad Channel Station in Queens. This caused many commuters to take alterative routes of buses and or other transits. The cable was stolen from 12 locations. In the busy rush hours overcrowding effected some 775,000 riders for the day. The theft was discovered on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 when a train suddenly lost power. This left some 150 passengers to walk through train tracks to get back to the the station. Although most sevices were partically retored by late Wednesday morning, May 27, 2015 some riders were still left to take shuttle buses again. The copper is sold as scrap has plagued railroads and utilities across the country. In 2013 employees of the MTA's Long Island Rail Road were arrested on charges they conspired to sell $250.000 worth of copper wires over a three year period. Invesigations will continue to find evidence and arrest the copper thieves.
