Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the latest to weigh in on the bizarre story of Rachel Dolezal, writing in a column for Time entitled "Let Rachel Dolezal Be as Black as She Wants to Be."
Abdul-Jabbar writes that the details surrounding Dolezal, who, though born white and raised by white parents, has since identified as black and even served as the president of her local NAACP chapter, "seem pretty damning."
But nevertheless, the former NBA player writes that Dolezal "has proven herself a fierce and unrelenting champion for African-Americans politically and culturally."
Perhaps some of this sensitivity comes from her adoptive black siblings. Whatever the reason, she has been fighting the fight for several years and seemingly doing a first-rate job. Not only has she led her local chapter of the NAACP, she teaches classes related to African-American culture at Eastern Washington University and is chairwoman of a police oversight committee monitoring fairness in police activities. Bottom line: The black community is better off because of her efforts.
Discounting comparisons that others have attempted to make to Caitlyn Jenner, Abdul-Jabbar writes that unlike Jenner, who faced a "biological imperative rather than a free will choice of orientation ... Dolezal chose to identify with a racial group she was not born into."
He adds that because some research has led scientists to find that there is no such thing a race, as such, Dolezal has "merely selected a cultural preference of which cultural group she most identifies with."
So, does it really matter whether Rachel Dolezal is black or white?
Dr. King said we should be judged by the content of character rather than color of skin, which is what makes this case so difficult. So, yes, it does matter. Apparently lying to employers and the public you’re representing when the lie benefits you personally and professionally is a deficit in character. However, the fight for equality is too important to all Americans to lose someone as passionate as she is and who has accomplished as much as she has.
Abdul-Jabbar is not the first to come to Dolezal's defense. Both Keri Hilson and Melissa Harris-Perry faced backlash after they too sought to justify Dolezal's actions. Harris-Perry asked if she could perhaps be "trans-black" (identifying with a race she was not born into), and Hilson tweeted that Dolezal should be thanked because "she's doing more than most of us do for ourselves."

Did you see Don Lemon's interview with Montel Williams? Oh man; a Black man has finally stood up and called her out as a liar. Yes, he said he applauded anyone that does work on behalf of others (outside of their group). He himself does work on behalf of Iranian soldiers but that doesn't make him Iranian. Rachett Dolezar's parents have called her out in their own interviews. This is the girl's parents!!! So who are we to say otherwise? I agree with her parents. I'm with the parents; she was born White... it's on her Birth certificate that her father is White.

There is more to this story than meets the eyes. The reason why Rachel Dolezal’s parents would expose their daughter to such public humiliation is because Rachel reported that her 19 year old brother was molesting the Black adopted children. She probably caught her brother in the act and discovered that nobody cared!

On the other thing, I said the Black men in BIA are trifling for nothing standing up for us... but Montel Williams is by no means trifling. He gets it... and I wished that I could have found the entire clip of the interview where he spoke about his biracial mother and how it would be insulting to her as a biracial person what this woman is doing to offend Black women!

Howard University's lawyers questioned whether Rachel Dolezal had tried to pose as African-American when she applied for admission to the historically black college in the nation's capital.
Rachel Dolezal had accused the university of denying her a teaching position because she was white. During a deposition, Howard's lawyers asked whether she had tried to mislead the admissions office with an essay focused on black history and identity, according to court documents reviewed by The Assoicated Press.
"I plunged into black history and novels, feeling the relieving release of understanding and common ground," she wrote in the essay. "My struggles paled as I read of the atrocities so many ancestors faced in America."
In her admissions essay, she described her family as "transracial," writing that "at the early age of three I showed an awareness of the richness and beauty of dark skin when I said, 'Mama, all people are beautiful but black people are so beautiful.'"
"I don't know that I could lead anyone to believe that I'm African-American. I believe that, you know, in certain context, maybe someone would assume that, but I don't know that I could convince someone that I'm a hundred percent African-American," she responded.
Asked to explain what she considers her own race to be, she said, "if you have to choose to describe yourself and you're able to give terms like a fraction or whatever but an overall picture, I consider myself to be Caucasian biologically."
Again, those people in Montana need to show DNA, and come clean about Joshua Dolezal

I don't condone any acts of child abuse. I don't believe anything this girl says. I will however believe facts. Let's get the official court documents and investigative reports. So far every other thing that has come out of her mouth... is a LIE. She said she was the victim of a Hate Crime... Not True She said Howard University discriminated against her (when she was not in Blackface), the court found in favor of Howard University.
