Second Annual Electoral Reform Symposium (1039 hits)

I am very appreciative of the leadership, integrity and understanding Free and Equal has of the flaws within the system and feel they’re ready to challenge those flaws and turn the system so it works with the people.” - Dennis Kucinich, former Ohio Congressman & presidential candidate

Dear Free and Equal Supporter,

The second annual Electoral Reform Symposium will take place at Infinity Park in Glendale, CO on Saturday, November 14th, 2015 from 9AM-4PM MT and will be broadcast worldwide via www.freeandequal.org. The event is hosted by the Free and Equal Elections Foundation

Speakers for the 2015 Electoral Reform Symposium include voting methods experts Rob Richie (FairVote, via Skype), Bill Redpath (Libertarian Party), Aaron Hamlin (Center for Election Science), and Matt Crane (Clerk and Recorder of Arapahoe County), as well as election integrity experts Richard Winger (Ballot Access News, Free and Equal), Harvie Branscomb (Coloradans for Voting Integrity), Marilyn Marks (Director of Election Integrity CO), and Sharon Meroni (Defend the Vote from Illinois) discussing relevant topics such as approval voting, instant runoff voting, and proportional representation; as well as decisive issues such as the use of closed source electronic voting machines, Electoral College, gerrymandering, ballot access barriers, and Top-Two primary systems. Additional speakers to be announced.

The experts that participate in the symposium will be integrated into Free and Equal’s revolutionary Election Assistant, to provide relevant, powerful, and educational commentary about the electoral system for use by voters and candidates alike. Voters will have easy access to fact-based information, candidate voting records, and campaign finance records so that they will be able make informed decisions. The Free and Equal Election Assistant will provide a level playing field for all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, background, and campaign finances, so that all candidates have a chance to reach the voters.

The 2015 Electoral Reform Symposium will build upon the momentum of the 2015 United We Stand Festival in Los Angeles, California, scheduled for 19 September, 2015. Together these events represent a new force in American politics: the Electoral Reform Movement. The Free and Equal Elections Foundation is at the lead of this movement, utilizing its rich history of open debates, educational symposiums, and innovative platforms to promote honesty, integrity, and equality in politics. In 2016, the Free and Equal Elections Foundation will host open presidential debates as an alternative to the largely corrupt Commission on Presidential Debates platform.

The Free and Equal Elections Foundation invites you to become engaged in the Electoral Reform Movement. Purchase tickets for the 2015 United We Stand Festival here. This event will be free and open to the public. Learn more about the 2nd Annual Electoral Reform Symposium here

Support these worthy projects - make a tax-deductible donation to Free and Equal Elections today. We’ve got a lot of difficult and important work ahead of us. We can’t do it without you. Thanks in advance for your support.

With gratitude,

The Free and Equal Elections Team

In the meantime, you can read up on the National Popular Vote bill.

Presidential elections don't have to continue to be dominated by and determined by a handful of swing states besieged with attention, while most of the country is politically irrelevant.

In 2012, more than 99% of presidential campaign attention (ad spending and visits) was invested on voters in just the only ten competitive states. There are only expected to be 7 remaining swing states in 2016.

Issues of importance to non-battleground states are of so little interest to presidential candidates that they don’t even bother to poll them.

Over 87% of both Romney and Obama campaign offices were in just the 12 swing states. The few campaign offices in the 38 remaining states were for fund-raising, volunteer phone calls, and arranging travel to battleground states.

“Battleground” states receive 7% more federal grants than “spectator” states, twice as many presidential disaster declarations, more Superfund enforcement exemptions, and more No Child Left Behind law exemptions.

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and DC.

The bill ensures that every vote, in every state, will matter equally in every presidential election.

The bill has passed a total of 33 legislative chambers in 22 rural, small, medium, large, Democratic, Republican and purple states with 250 electoral votes
The bill has been enacted by 11 jurisdictions possessing 165 electoral votes—61% of the 270 electoral votes necessary to activate it.

Thanks Joe. I was in California in 2012 and know just what you mean. Not only did neither candidate campaign there but the election was called before they'd even counted our votes. I will check out the link.
