Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants (1660 hits)

United States Patent  6,630,507
Hampson ,   et al. October 7, 2003

Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services (Washington, DC

In yet other embodiments of the invention, the cannabinoids are ##STR10##

wherein numbering conventions for each of the ring positions are shown, and R.sub.27, R.sub.28 and R.sub.29 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, unsubstituted lower alkyl such as CH.sub.3, and carboxyl such as COCH.sub.3. Particular examples of nonpsychoactive cannabinoids that fall within this definition are cannabidiol and ##STR11##

and other structural analogs of cannabidiol.

In more particular embodiments, the cannabinoid is used to prevent or treat an ischemic or neurodegenerative disease in the central nervous system of a subject, by administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a cannabinoid to protect against oxidative injury to the central nervous system. The cannabinoid may be any of the compounds set forth above, or more specifically ##STR12##

wherein R.sub.27, R.sub.28 and R.sub.29 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, lower alkyl such as CH.sub.3, and carboxyl such as COCH.sub.3, and particularly wherein a) R.sub.27 =R.sub.28 =R.sub.29 =H b) R.sub.27 =R.sub.29 =H; R.sub.28 =CH.sub.3 c) R.sub.27 =R.sub.28 =CH.sub.3 ; R.sub.29 =H d) R.sub.27 =R.sub.28 =COCH.sub.3 ; R.sub.29 =H e) R.sub.27 =H; R.sub.28 =R.sub.29 =COCH.sub.3

When R.sub.27 =R.sub.28 =R.sub.29 =H, then the compound is cannabidiol. When R.sub.27 =R.sub.29 =H and R.sub.28 =CH.sub.3, the compound is CBD monomethyl ether. When R.sub.27 =R.sub.28 =CH.sub.3 and R.sub.29 =H, the compound is CBD dimethyl ether. When R.sub.27 =R.sub.28 =COCH.sub.3 and R.sub.29 =H, the compound is CBD diacetate. When R.sub.27 =H and R.sub.28 =R.sub.29 =COCH.sub.3, the compound is CBD monoacetate. The ischemic or neurodegenerative disease may be, for example, an ischemic infarct, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Down's syndrome, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) dementia, myocardial infarction, or treatment and prevention of intraoperative or perioperative hypoxic insults that can leave persistent neurological deficits following open heart surgery requiring heart/lung bypass machines, such as coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG).

The invention also includes an assay for selecting a cannabinoid to use in treating a neurological disease by determining whether the cannabinoid is an antioxidant. Once it has been determined that the cannabinoid is an antioxidant, an antioxidant effective amount of the cannabinoid is administered to treat the neurological disease, such as a vascular ischemic event in the central nervous system, for example the type caused by a neurovascular thromboembolism. Similarly, the method of the present invention includes determining whether a disease is caused by oxidative stress, and if the disease is caused by oxidative stress, administering the cannabinoid in a therapeutically effective antioxidant amount.

Yes Brother Steve, I remember a study for medical marijuana and the movement to take Marijuana off the Controlled Substance Act but thanks to republican president Richard M, Nixon and others like him in that party will keep that drug on the list.

...Fellas, you know like I know, the weed is "Forever." it was here before us and will be here long after we're gone. Its living vegetation like many other species of vegetation. Personally, I see nothing wrong with it, medicinal or otherwise. Am I a proponent? Absolutely!

'The Cannabusiness Report airs every Monday at 10 p.m. ET. Nerz explores the country’s marijuana transformation.'
"After medical marijuana laws passed in California and a few other states, I saw the sea change coming and consciously decided to become a self-styled weed expert. 58 percent of Americans now want to make consumption legal – Republican candidates like Jeb will likely push it off as a states rights issue. The X factor is Hillary Clinton. In keeping with her tight-lipped pre-campaign, Hilary has gone on record by aggressively saying nothing. She told CNN she’s going to “wait and see.” The feds have a tendency to go after publicly successful businesses like Harborside Health Center. Smith will explore, six months after speaking with TVNewser about the potential lifesaving benefits of medical mariguana.

Ya’ateeh, As Salaam Alaikum, Shalom, Hotep, and Hola, My Friends One and All!

Ironically, this topic has relevance to an upcoming book which is currently in production:
'Hallow II' A Portentous Epoch of Sagacious Redolence and Epiphany

"The Catharsis Table" - an excerpt - (a sneak preview):
...Beer moves by the six-pack and as singles. The liquor goes by the dollar cup and priced upwards to the half-gallon. The steady flow of neighborhood customers keep the old lady pretty busy, by day and by night. Oh, did I mention that she was about eighty-four or eighty-five years of age? That was of course back a few years ago.

A few of the regulars do enjoy a joint or two with their order of a shot and a brew. They bring their own weed although a simple telephone call could provide delivery service. She didn’t mind much when we lit up. She never failed to grace the table with her rendition of reefer’s effect on her.
“Damn man, when I suffered from my back pain, Ronald gave me a toke or two…sometimes I smoked a half of one. That pain, Oh my goodness… would just simply disappear. I couldn’t remember where I put a few things or what in hell I was doing in the kitchen…the back pain was gone and I felt a whole hell of a lot better than I did before. ****, I even skipped through the house and sang a few songs…at eighty-four! So you know I know what it’s possibly doing for you. Go on and smoke it, I don’t care too much, so much as ‘John Law’ don’t know about it.”
>
I do hope that you all enjoyed that little snippet...This new book should be available well before 'Halloween 2015.'

The federal government keeps the plant illegal, doesn't let anyone but the government do research on it, then because of its monopoly makes a "discovery" at the expense of the taxpayer but patents it for itself. Fortunately this patent will expire in a few years.

Greg, this might be an issue if they pass medical marijuana here in PA, since they're not making the plant itself legal, just extracts from it.

Brother Doctor Gregory Boulware,

From that sneak preview, I can see my grand Auntee again when I was a young man back behind the house where the men of the family would go when we all gather on those summer holidays. She was the most down to earth sister out of the six. That was a nice image that popped into my head.

Brother Steve,

As you may already know that thee war on drugs was a war on the middle classes and poor Blacks to make the privatization of the jail systems possible. All of this started with Nixon and promoted by Raegan and BUSH.

Take a look at this Washington Post article https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/re...

If you don't get the book, I'll make sure that 'The Catharsis Table' reaches your eyeballs - not to worry, you won't miss the issue, I'll make damn sure of it. :-)

Brother Steve, You and I both are well versed in Pennsylvania non-sequitur(s). This 'Quaker-State' is always the last to do anything!

Good Stuff Brothers! Thanks.

As marijuana policy becomes a major issue in the 2016 presidential race, Rand Paul has made a name for himself as a champion of reform within the Republican party — but while he reaps the political benefits of appearing sensible on marijuana laws, it’s still unclear where the Senator stands on ending marijuana prohibition.

As a Senator, Rand Paul made some moves to scale back current marijuana laws. Working with colleagues across the aisle, he supported ending the federal ban on medical marijuana, which is legal in 23 states, along with Guam and the District of Columbia. Earlier this year, Paul co-sponsored legislation that would have lifted banking restrictions for legal marijuana businesses. The Kentucky Senator also spoke on multiple occasions about the excessive impact of American drug laws, particularly on people of color.

This record has helped him stand out from the crowded field of Republican candidates and has earned him some political support from advocates of marijuana reform. In June, the Marijuana Policy Project ranked Paul as the best presidential candidate on the issue, and went on to donate $14,500 to his campaign. That same month, Rand Paul campaigned in Colorado, where he courted the marijuana industry by organizing the “first ever marijuana presidential fundraiser,” an event that earned him over $100,000 in donations. As those numbers show, Rand Paul’s efforts to woo the marijuana industry are certainly bearing fruit.

While many voters may see Rand Paul as the one Republican candidate with a strong opposition to the failed War on Drugs, his rhetoric on the issue takes a very different turn when he’s facing crowds of social conservatives:

At a lunch Friday with about a dozen evangelical pastors in a Cedar Rapids hotel, [Rand] Paul assured the group that he disagrees with libertarians who support legalizing drugs.

“He made it very clear that he does not support legalization of drugs like marijuana and that he supports traditional marriage,” [said Brad Sherman of the Solid Rock Christian Church in Coralville, Iowa].

(via Reason)
Rand Paul likes to portray himself as a libertarian-leaning candidate who appeals to young Republicans, but recent polls show that “nearly two-thirds of Millennials who identify as Republican support legalizing marijuana.” On one hand, Paul is trying to increase his public support from marijuana reformers by echoing their talking points; but on the other, he quickly reverts back to an all-too-familiar anti-legalization position when seeking the vote of drug war advocates.

On several occasions, Rand Paul has criticized his rivals’ positions on marijuana as “hypocritical,” deploring that candidates who have used marijuana in their youth “admit their mistakes but now still want to put people in jail for that.” But Rand Paul shares the guilt for this hypocrisy: he directly benefits from the profits of the marijuana industry, and yet remains unwilling to take a stand to end marijuana prohibition. Instead, Rand Paul tells both sides what they want to hear, making his positions on the issue unclear, if not outright dishonest.

Bernie Sanders also indicated that the War on Drugs will be a focus of his campaign. “We want to deal with minimum sentencing,” Sanders said Tuesday, “Too many lives have been destroyed for non-violent issues. People that are sent to jail have police records. We have got to change that. Our job is to keep people out of jail, not in jail.” According to audience members, Bernie Sanders also said that his campaign will be addressing marijuana legalization in the weeks to come:

While we’ll have to wait for the platform’s release to get a clear picture of Bernie’s marijuana agenda, this announcement suggests that Sanders is looking to take the lead on the issue — something that most other presidential hopefuls have neglected to do thus far. Rather than directly discussing marijuana legalization as a policy, the Republican candidates have debated over the role of the federal government in imposing prohibition in states that have legalized the plant. While several GOP contenders, such as Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, and Carly Fiorina, have come out in favor of states’ right to regulate marijuana, others argue that federal prohibition should be enforced in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Sanders’ Democratic rivals, on the other hand, have stayed mostly silent on the issue during the course of their presidential campaigns.
