BEAUTIFUL NEWS: Apple & Thurgood Marshall College Fund Create Brand New HBCU Scholarship Program

Thirty high-ranking undergraduate students will be given award packages, year-long mentorships with Apple employees and a paid summer internship at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA.

On Aug. 25, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) started admitting applicants for its brand new scholarship institute, the Apple HBCU Scholars Program.

Slated as now being the biggest scholarship program for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, 30 high-ranking undergraduate students will be given award packages, year-long mentorships with Apple employees and a paid summer internship at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA.

Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. the President and CEO of (TMCF), notes the distinction between giving students money for tuition and providing students with varied resources to succeed.

“There are ‘scholarships’ and then there are ‘scholarship programs,'” said Taylor, Jr. “Apple has made an historic investment in a scholarship program that will transform the lives of HBCU star students by not only removing the financial barriers to college attendance, but by providing them additional non-financial program elements like Apple mentors and summer internships. These Apple HBCU Scholars will be the future tech industry leaders.”

This is the first of many programs that Apple and the TMCF Diversity Initiative will be partnering on. Apple and TMCF publicized their alliance earlier this year in March, saying that they created a $40 million multi-year commitment to recognize, develop and gather talented young Black students and professionals. The funding will go towards building a network for young talent, crafting internships, access to Apple’s work spaces and grants to build options for successful students to enter the tech field. Within TMCF’s entrepreneurial department, a hand-picked group of students will be given a chance to go to Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference.

Denise Young Smith, the vice president of Apple’s Worldwide Human Resources Division, says the program prioritizes offering gifted students exposure to career options in the field of technology.

“We’re big believers that innovation will be strongest when talented people from diverse backgrounds are part of the creative process,” Smith said. “That’s why we’re so proud to be partnering with TMCF to help us find the next generation of innovators.”

In addition to providing mentors and internships, offerings from the Apple HBCU Scholars Program include up to $25,000 for senior year tuition, a post-graduate career development program, chances to work as an ambassador on HBCU college campuses, and finally, entrance into leadership summits hosted by Apple on TMCF.
