The Department of Human Services and Consumer Sciences held their 12th annual Childhood Obesity Conference November 18 in the Cecilia Scott Lane Building on campus. This year’s theme was the “The Role of Added Sugars in Obesity and Diabetes Among Children.”

Dr. D. Morgan –Bloom Higginbottom, a Department of Agriculture and Human Sciences professor at Prairie View A&M, served as the guest speaker for the conference. During her talk Dr. Higginbottom spoke to the audience on the relationship among physical activity and obese or healthy children; to educate children and parents about portion sizes; to encourage parents to become good role models in their food selection as well as to provide their children with ample opportunities for healthy food choices; and to raise parents and students awareness about the quality of school lunches, etc.

Following Dr. Higginbottom’s address, a panel discussion followed featuring Dr. Higginbottom, Dr. Dandy Levy-Collins, TSU Family and Consumer Sciences professor, Dr. Judith Anglin, DDP Program Director, and Ms. Tara Davis, Manager Community Initiatives and Volunteer Development Diabetes Organization Houston, and conducted and question and answer panel session.

“The mission of the conferences is to raise awareness and educate the community –at-large with healthy lifestyles; healthy food habits, and ways to avoid childhood obesity,” said Dr. Selina Ahmed, interim chair Department of Human Services and Consumer Sciences. “Our goal is to reach out to the population who fell in between the crack of statistics and are the victims of health inequality and health disparity.”
