Without uttering a sound or saying a word the audience is already mesmerized by the life force we know as Forest Whitaker when he takes the stage as "Erie Smith". It's a bitter cold New York winter night in February's "black history month" when the actor, writer, producer, and Academy Award winning actor makes his Broadway debut in Eugene O'Neill's "Hughie" a short two character play set in a hotel lobby in Midtown Manhattan during the Summer of 1928. Mr. Whitaker inhabits "Erie Smith" a two bit broken gambler who in a melancholy narrative comes to grip with his own set ups, set backs, and disappointments while in pursuit of his version of The American Dream. In an attempt to validate his life "Erie" has both an intrusive and delicate way of confirming his existence via the night clerk "Hughie". Only now at the opening of the production "Hughie" is dead and for the duration of play you see "Erie Smith" struggling to find the same sort of call and response through "Hughie's" uninterested replacement!!
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania alum and entertainment correspondent Tanisha LaVerne Grant had an opportunity to chat with Forest Whitaker opening night!!
