Houston's brilliant plan to attack and defeat Jim Crow segregation by using the inequality of the "separate but equal" doctrine (from the Supreme Court's Plessy v. Ferguson decision) as it pertained to public education in the United States was the master stroke that brought about the landmark Brown decision. The mentor and molder of Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall "This fight for equality of educational opportunity (was) not an isolated struggle. All our struggles must tie in together and support one another. . .We must remain on the alert and push the struggle farther with all our might."

We beg you to save young America from the blight of race prejudice. Do not bind the children within the narrow circles of your own lives. The hate and scorn showered on us Negro officers by our fellow Americans convinced me that there was no sense in my dying for a world ruled by them. I made up my mind that if I got through this war I would study law and use my time fighting for men who could not strike back. The race problem in the United States is the type of unpleasant problem which we would rather do without but which refuses to be buried. Christianity has always seemed to fight a losing battle against race. ..........Charles Hamilton Houston

Before Brown: Charles H. Houston and the Gaines Case Homer Adolf Plessy purchased a ticket from New Orleans to Covington and took a seat in the “white” section of the East Louisiana Railroad Company train. Railroad officials ordered Plessy to the “colored” car. When he refused, a police officer forcibly ejected Plessy and hurried him off to the parish jail in New Orleans. Officials charged Plessy with violating a recently enacted state law—one of many Jim Crow laws enacted in the late 1800s as whites moved to entrench their power in state governments--that barred persons from occupying rail cars other than those to which their race had been assigned. Had railroad officials not been notified in advance that Homer Plessy was one-eighth black, he undoubtedly could have taken his seat in the “white” section of the train. Plessy appeared to be white. Louisiana, however, applied “the one drop rule”: anyone with one drop of non-white blood was classified as “colored” under the Louisiana code. Plessy gave up the privilege that he might have enjoyed as the result of his light pigmentation because he shared the goals of the Citizens’ Committee to Test the Constitutionality of the Separate Car Law, a New Orleans group of blacks and Creoles. The Committee believed that a white-appearing plaintiff such as Plessy might be more likely to obtain the sympathy of a court reviewing the Louisiana law. Thank you..............Charles Hamilton Houston

/* Excellent Post Brother Imam! I've seen much of this footage on the re-televised "Eyes On The Prize." Much of the footage is also relived on many other programs via 'PBS' as of late. I'm sure a lot of it had something to do with "Black History Month Celebrations." Much of the footage is also revolved around actual live renditions...personal experiences. Through historical interviews and footage, the critically acclaimed Eyes on the Prize traces the civil rights movement from the Montgomery bus boycott to the Voting Rights Act; from early acts of individual courage through the flowering of a mass movement and its eventual split into factions. “Narrated by political leader and civil rights activist Julian Bond (1940-2015)” http://blackhistory.com/content/288593/a-t... This blog represents the necessity to change our way of thinking! Mr. Houston recognizes the problem that Black Americans are oppressed at all four corners of this country by White Americans. What is unfortunate is that Mr. Houston has not the slightest idea that our permanent solution is that we must desire to become a sovereign people in a country of our own. Mr. Houston thinks that Black Americans coming into seven former Confederate states as our country is impossible. So the thought of what our permanent solution is has not grazed his mind! All of you especially the ignorant Dr. Boulware liking this block so much exposes the ignorance and stupidity of how you all think because you all know what I will permanent solution is but Mr. Houston did not know. But, I've told all of you what our permanent solution is and none of you have said that I was wrong, but you all refuses to support my prophecy of becoming a sovereign people in a country of our own. If we do not become a sovereign people and Black Americans and White Americans lives for ever in this present situation Black Americans will always be oppressed by White Americans. Can't you all stupid asses see that!

A mentor of The Honorable Charles H. Houston ......and fellow Spingarn Medal Winner ......Carter Godwin Woodson was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Woodson was one of the first scholars to study African-American history. WROTE: If Liberia has failed, then, it is no evidence of the failure of the Negro in government. It is merely evidence of the failure of slavery. Even schools for Negroes, then, are places where they must be convinced of their inferiority. One can cite cases of Negroes who opposed emancipation and denounced the abolitionists. If the white man wants to hold on to it, let him do so; but the Negro, so far as he is able, should develop and carry out a program of his own. As another has well said, to handicap a student by teaching him that his black face is a curse and that his struggle to change his condition is hopeless is the worst sort of lynching. The strongest bank in the United States will last only so long as the people will have sufficient confidence in it to keep their money there. And thus goes segregation which is the most far-reaching development in the history of the Negro since the enslavement of the race. The mere imparting of information is not education.
