Philly Style and Philly Profile: Commentary on Drugs and Gangs in America (3426 hits)

Gangs and Drugs: Two lethal destructive plagues that are attacking young African-American males in the black communities throughout the United States of America.
My novel, Philly Style and Philly Profile, is set in the seventies but reflects how the destruction of young males in the black communities in the United States, continues even today…the twenty-first century!

What was happening in inner-city Philadelphia in the seventies is still happening in twenty-first Century black urban America.

Social Commentator Roland Martin said: “Launched in the early 1970s, the War on Drugs is the nation’s longest, most expensive battle — 40 years and hundreds of billions of dollars spent and millions of lives destroyed. It continues, even though most experts say it can’t, and will never, be won. And though whites are more likely to use or sell narcotics, African-Americans, and black men in particular, have become the war’s primary casualties.”

In my novel, Philly Style and Philly Profile, I want to show what happens in the streets of Philadelphia in the seventies, is still alive and actively wiping out the vitality of our communities today.

In my seventies novel, I want to show real flesh and blood young black males and humanize the cold statistics. The statistics are real young black males!

For example, consider 2014, and look at Chicago and other black urban areas in America, where the destruction of young black males continues.

The novel, Philly Style and Philly Profile, is about young black males that make good choices, but also about young black males who make bad choices and that cause their destruction and devastation of others in the urban Philadelphia community of the seventies.

In my trilogy, A Brownstone In Brooklyn, Philly Style and Philly profile and Ghost of Atlanta…this is MY Macbeth. I’m a great fan of William Shakespeare. This is my dark, brooding novel that is meant to upset and make people think. This is what I feel Shakespeare wanted to do when he composed the tragedy of Macbeth.

I’ve included three book reviews that reflect the goals of the novel. These readers get the point I was making in this novel.

After reading the blog and the reviews, I hope you purchase and read Philly Style and Philly Profile!

Philly Style and Philly Profile
By Steven C. Thedford
Too often on the news we hear of African American males who have succumbed to violence and drugs. After a while, we do not care why, we just hope and pray that we are not caught in the crossfire. However, in Philly Style and Philly Profile Thompson does not let us ignore them, as society would like to. Moreover, he introduces the reader to some of these young men and their fears, hopes, desires, and beliefs. Even though the story takes place in the seventies, Philly Style and Philly Profile occur every night in America.

Philly Style and Philly Style!
By Alberto Romero
This is another remarkable novel by Julius Thompson. In Philly Style and Philly Profile he takes the reader through the streets of the City of Brotherly Love and shows us, with engaging and touching down-to-earth prose, the good and evil, the hate and love in the lives of hostile and violent young people, some of whom are saved thanks to the constant help of dedicated community counselors. A troubled side of the great city of Philadelphia, portrayed vividly by a brilliant storyteller.

BOOK 2 OF THE ANDY PILGRIM TRILOGY…THINGS IS DONE PHILLY STYLE!
By DENNIS DE ROSE
This is the second of the Andy Pilgrim trilogy. While the title does not try to explain the book, that was the author’s intent. The title refers to something special specific to the city of Philadelphia only. You have to read the book very carefully to understand what Julius is trying to say. He is being pervasive on purpose. This second book leads into the final of the trilogy, “Ghost of Atlanta”

“Philly Style, Philly Profile” takes place in the 70′s.Andy, a black man, works for the Philly Bulletin. He is immediately confronted by one of the many problems that black men had to deal with then and now…RACISM. That`s just one central issue. Added, we find out that he is slated to cover high school sports and we are immediately introduced to 2 more very dangerous threats…DRUGS and GANGS.

Andy gets caught up deeply in this mix when he befriends Carl, an up and coming basketball player who’s getting ready to go off to college in just a few days. I won’t spoil the story for you but I will say that it’s extremely fast paced and relevant for the times. Of course all cities big and small sadly still face these same issues.

You will read this and, once you do, you’ll want to continue the saga in “Ghost of Atlanta”. I would be remiss if I did not take a moment and mention the fantastic editing in this super story. I read this, looking for mistakes and I found very few. My hats off to Julius’ editor, Moneysaver Editing. Keep writing Julius, great job.

Great post Brother Thompson. I too enjoyed the 70's and I too remember, this life style lives on here in Chicago as well.

Greetings Mr. Julius Thompson,

Gangs and drugs you say are two lethal destructive plagues that are attacking young African American males in the Black community throughout the United States of America.

But, what you did not offer us Black Americans is a permanent solution! A permanent solution is what we need!

I propose that our only permanent solution is our desire to become a sovereign people in a country of our own. Our country will consist of seven former Confederate states; Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina will come to us Black Americans that we can live life without oppression and influence by White Americans.
There is no other option.

My other concern is this. In your mind are there differences between an Afro American and Black Americans

Mr. Ron,

Don't you agree I've presented some tough questions!

Harry,

With respect to your elder status, this is not the forum to discuss your personal agenda, here now on Brother Thompson's power blog of "Philly Style and Philly Profile: Commentary on Drugs and Gangs in America."

Now if you want to add on your experience with the Drugs and Gangs in Wilson Salem, NC or what you have done to get involved to combat these issues in your community, I m sure would be more then welcomed.

Now if you don't have anything that you have experienced on this subject or seen the video presentation, say, nothing else in respect to Brother Thompson's blog.

Thank You.

Mr. Ron,

You said that Mr. Thompson's forum/blog is not the place to discuss my personal agenda!

Well, Mr. Thompson opened up with and indicting claim that gangs and drugs are two lethal weapons that has been destroying Black American man for a very long time; and I asked Mr. Thompson what would he propose as our permanent solution and you consider this question to be personal.

Well you are a very stupid man because it is not personal! Idiot, Mr. Thompson open the discussion with a very serious concern for Black American men; gangs and drugs are the two lethal things destroying our young men and I asked for a solution and you say that I'm hijacking Mr. Thompson's blog to discuss my personal agenda. You us don't!

Ya’ateeh, As Salaam Alaikum, Shalom Alaikum, Hotep, Hola, Konichiwa, Privyet, Hallo, and Hello to All and You, Brother Thompson!

I am a 'Philly' product of the Fifties, albeit my experiences crisscrossed the seventies; my younger years. I can relate very well with what was actually happening in Philly during the so-called drug war, gang war, and every war that had taken place since the sixties. Remember 'Frank Rizzo' and 'Move?' Mumia? What about the white and Black wars that occurred on a daily basis throughout the city and its schools? Can you recall 'The Tenderlines,' 'The Zulu,' The Morocco's,' The 2-9 D's,' and a few other neighborhood gangs that roamed Philly's streets and corners?

Brother, you might be interested in my 'Ghost Writer Interview.':

G.W.:
You’ve mentioned street gangs in Philly…what were some of their names?

G.V.B.:
Oh man, ‘The 3, 9-D’s,’ ‘The Valley,’ ‘The Tenderlines,’ ‘The Zulu,’ ’30-N (30th and Norris),’ and a bunch of little punk ass groups throughout the city.

The aforementioned gangs were the most prominent groups of young Black men who found sanctuary within those confines. Yeah, confines…it’s just like being in the service – your life is no longer your own. You belonged to the gang, body and soul. That’s just some of the things that occurred during the 5o’s thru the seventies here in Philly. The gang’s that you see on TV was nothing like what I’m talking about. In those days, if you had a beef you duked it out with your fists and maybe an occasional knife would break out. Guns were a rarity… One also had to be careful when visiting a girl in another neighborhood too. If you got caught in someone else’s turf, you generally got ‘moved-on.’

Brother Thompson...

After viewing your video, I've really come to appreciate your work as well as my own.

Thus far, I've published seven books and working on eight and nine...number ten is not far behind. The eight book is expected to be released this summer (not later than mid June). I have had the greatest confidence in my contributions to date as well as my may article postings across the Internet. This punch has given me a greater confidence in my future endeavors as well as those currently existing. i hope that you will take a look and see my written works for yourself.

I'd like to do a few trailers (working on it) and planning to barnstorm a few book stores across the greater Philadelphia area.

Thank you for your contributions and the time you've taken to view this message.

My the blessings of 'The Most High' continue to shine on you and yours.

...Shalom!
