Marriage Advice from a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich (2214 hits)

Peanut Butter and Jelly are two different things – Just as peanut butter and jelly are separate spreads, so a husband and a wife are two different people. The peanut butter does not force the jelly to be like it, nor does the jelly try to force the peanut butter to be like it. Husbands and wives should appreciate that their spouse is a different person than them.

Peanut Butter and Jelly complement one another – The differences in peanut butter and jelly do not cause the sandwich to be divided. Rather their differences blend together to create the beauty of PB&J sandwich. Similarly, husbands and wives must use their unique strengths and weakness to complement and sharpen one another.

Peanut Butter and Jelly cannot be separated – Once put on a sandwich, PB&J cannot be separated. They are so blended that they have become one flesh…err… one sandwich. The husband and wife’s lives are so intertwined that they have become one. As they seek Christ together, the husband and wife draw closer to one another becoming one of heart and mind.

Peanut Butter and Jelly can be a bit messy – Who can make a PB&J sandwich without making a mess? It is impossible to not get some on your hands or mouth. Marriage is also messy at times. But when the Gospel permeates a marriage, it takes two broken sinners and creates a beautiful picture of Christ and the Church. Struggles become opportunities to display Christ’s love.

Peanut Butter and Jelly have bread as their head and foundation – A peanut butter and jelly sandwich has bread has its foundation and as its top. Likewise, a married couple must have the Bread of Life as their foundation and their head. They must build their marriage upon the principles of Scripture and submit to Christ as their head and authority in all things.

A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is common thing and easy to take for granted. Likewise, it is easy to let marriage become normal. We must work hard to not take it for granted. We must appreciate our spouses, pursue unity, work through messes, and remember that Christ is our foundation and head.
