Alabama State University’s Fall Fine Arts Dance Concert Includes a Number Honoring Prince! (2796 hits)

WHAT: ASU's Fall Fine Arts Dance Concert Includes a Number Honoring Prince!
WHEN: Nov. 16 - 19, at 7 p.m. each night
WHERE: ASU's Leila Barlow Theatre in the Tullibody Fine Arts Building; corner N. University & S. Jackson St.

Don’t miss an exciting night of dance when Alabama State University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Dance Program presents its 2016 Fall Concert on Nov. 16-19, at 7 p.m. nightly at the ASU Leila Barlow Theatre in the Tullibody Fine Arts Building.

The dance concert will feature an electrifying program of diverse dance genres, including contemporary modern and ballet, classical ballet, hip-hop and African dance forms.

The event also will have one number that pays tribute to the incredible life of music icon Prince, who contributed so much to the American pop culture scene.

"We've packed so much into this concert, from pre-show discussions to brief after-show talk backs with the audience,” said Michael Medcalf, head of the BFA program. “The tribute honors the diversity that Prince embodied and shared through his music. The concert also includes a powerful retelling of the story of survival in an epic piece titled Birth of a Nation. Our audiences will be spellbound from beginning to end."

Medcalf and the two other ASU dance instructors, James Atkinson and Kavin Grant, have choreographed the works for the concert. Special guests Pamela Gay, Yvette Jones-Smedley, Dianne Green and Kathy Wright are among those who will serve as moderators for the pre-show discussions.

Special guest choreographer Terence Greene created the finale piece, titled New Beginnings.
“Terence created the work especially for the graduating BFA Dance class of 2017,” said Dr. Wendy Coleman, chair of ASU’s Department of Theatre Arts. "It's so full of life, energy, and power. I saw it in its infancy during Mr. Greene's visit, and I think I held my breath through the entire piece."

General Admission to the dance concert is $10 and $6 for ASU students with valid ID. Group rates are available.

“As always, opening night (Nov. 16) is ASU Family Appreciation Night and all ASU faculty, staff and students can receive one free admission,” said Coleman.

Coleman invites all interested dancers to audition for ASU’s BFA program, with fall auditions scheduled for Saturday, the final day of the concert.

“Auditionees will have free admission to the evening show on that Saturday,” said Coleman. “Our program requires audition for entrance.”

This is the fourth year of the new BFA in Dance degree program, the only one of its kind offered at an HBCU in the nation.
