Rand Paul objection to spending bill forces short-term government shutdown

WASHINGTON — Congress has failed to pass a government funding bill before a midnight deadline, shutting down non-essential government services for at least the remainder of the night until the Senate votes and the House follows suit.

The spending deal would increase domestic spending by $131 billion and defense spending by $165 billion over the next two years, provide nearly $90 billion in disaster aid and suspend the debt limit for one year — until well after the midterm elections.
